Unexplained death of elderly woman at home

POLICE are investigating an unexplained death after the body of an elderly woman was found in a house in Wirral.

Police were called to the address in Thorncliffe Road, Wallasey, at around 3.20pm on Monday after neighbours said they could smell gas.

Officers found the body of an 84 year old woman after forcing their way in when they could get no reply at the door.

A police spokeswoman said there had been a strong smell of gas in the house when officers searched it, and the neighbouring property was evacuated as a precaution.

Detectives arrested a 55-year-old man around 8.30am yesterday morning. He has now been released on police bail.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: “Officers are investigating an unexplained death following the discovery of a body in Thorncliffe Road.”

A post-mortem was carried out yesterday, but police said the cause of death was being with-held pending toxicology reports.

House-to-house enquiries were carried out by police following the discovery of the dead woman and the house was sealed off for forensic examination.
