Armed robbers strike in busy shopping centre - 9th Dec 2008 2:18am
ARMED robbers struck at a famous Birkenhead jewellers this evening.
Three men armed with hammers and an axe leapt from a silver saloon car and began smashing windows at Pykes in Grange Road.
Christmas shoppers looked on in astonishment as the three raiders pounded the reinforced glass, which eventually gave way under their blows.
The trio are believed to have grabbed handfuls of valuables then ran to the waiting vehicle, which was parked in a nearby side street with a getaway driver, and tore away at speed.
The shocking incident happened at around 5pm today.
Witnesses have been interviewed by detectives.
No one is believed to have been injured in the attack.
