While i was sitting in the 4i sorting out the bucket seats i was doing the sums for the rollcage the fella who is making me it needs to know this week.

To put a cage in a 4i you need to run it through the dashboard (behind the air vents at each end) so there will be some cutting to be done.

As i want the car motd because its going to be a track/sprint and sunday toy i would like to take the dash out what is the laws on this if i have speedo petrol temp gauges fitted into some sort of alloy dash would the car still go through a mot plus taking out the dash would loose a little weight.

Cheers peps.

Would look alittle tacky.

Once the dash is taken out it leaves alot of wires/ metal and also the steering is exposed.

im confused.Do u want a dash or not?

Making an ally dash wud be a lot of hassle, cost money and weigh more than the standard thin plastic dash.

All u need to do is fix some metal sections in and bend them to wear the clock screws are located and screw the clocks to it.and cover all wires in looming tape. Then u have the problem of heater vents/controls and stereo.

The interior will be unsightly if u remove the dash but its gonna be a stripped out racer so who cares?

or just cut the sections out for the A pillar cage sections and leave the rest as is?

If this isnt what ur trying to say ur doing then please correct me

You need a speedo for MOT, that's it. Mileage doesn't even need to be there, or accurate.

Here's a nice picture of a rollcage through air-vents:

Remember Scooby's escort.

That was the bare bones.

With a speedo that looked like a clock?

Leave the speedo in,
and put the others in a plastic back.
Put it on the back seat,
then if he say's where is the oil or temp
gauge you can say its on the back seat lol...

I think post has it what sounds about right.

if all components are in the plate ie, speed, rev counter, petrol, etc, then this won't be a problem for the mot also the hazard lights

on passion ford a lad has been converting a 1.1 fiesta to a track car and has done what you are thinking. you could mount them like the twin engined golf in ellesmere port on the roll cage. passion ford fiesta

MOT Requirements :

  • Speedo (Not sure as its NOT checked on the MOT but mileage is recorded on a MOT Test)
  • Indercator warning lamps (the little flashing lamp to let you know the indercators are on)
  • Hi-Beam warning lamp (As Above)
  • Rear fog lamp warning lamp)

The steering can be fully exposed as can the wiring and heaters etc.....

Personaly i would leave the dash in place and just chop out the end sections to allow the roll cage to fit correctly.

Cheers matey thats what i want to do couldnt get my brain to work to say what it looked like.

Do you think that would be ok for a mot???

Also cheers scooby sort of want the room BUT dont want to go cutting up the dash.

I can get ok money for my dash thats why i dont want to go chopping it.

They crack alot and un cracked ones are sort after.(dashboards)

as scoop said as long as the wires are insulated so they don't catch fire, catch moving parts, it should be ok,

what about mounting just the original clocks in a metal frame so that the wiring is easier to sort out think would save a few pennies aswell

Ally dash wouldnt cost much and will weight less than a standard one providing you keep to the basic needs.

Maybe cut the dash in half (Keep the drivers side) iv seen this done on a few cars and it saves having to rewire/add extra switchs and things, also means you can bin the heatermatrix - You've gutted the interior so I doubt your bothered about 'looks' too much tease

as said above dazza i think he wants to sell the dash as it is good nick or somethin

Ahhh I speed read it and didnt see that.

In that case make half a dash up from ally and add the vitals only, wont be hard if your handy with electrics since the wiring is already there. Are 4i dashs different to XR's? I didnt think it would be worth anything

Its almost the same as i 3 door cosworth (i think) They are prone to cracking so uncracked ones sell for about £60 i know its not big money.

Alloys is the one i am going for PLUS i have alot od gauges to go in the car see pic below.
