After getting in from work today, I noticed I had a letter off my insurance company (Liverpool Victoria). Thinking it would be good news about either a cheaper more affordable renewal quote or that my claim had finally worked out in my favour, I opened it rather quickly.
After spending a few minutes getting my head around the text and figures, it was to my disbelief that my renewal quote was to be rediculous.
"We have pleasure in enclosing our new quote of £4306.50 annual premium"
WHAT THE F**K!!!!
After my insurance being less than £2000 a year, it's more than double from 1 claim!?!?!
So now I'm stuck with 3 outcomes:
- Try and find a better renewal quote elsewhere (may involve lies)
- Go on the works insurance if possible
- Stop driving
The latter one, as much as I don't want to is seeming a pretty good idea atm as it will allow me to save £150 a month from the insurance, £100 a month in petrol, costs of tax, mot and any mods or problems.
So basically, I'm p*ssed off and just after a bit of advice on cheaper insurance or whats the best thing I could do.
this 1 claim? what was it for? ur fault? what else was involved?
As i said on MSN mate, think u shud a 1.1 fiesta and get insured third party, try a new company, maybe do pass plus, fit alarm,do anything to get the figure down
try auto direct i got a quoite off them an i had 1 crash an 3 points an mine was 1500
Ring the ****ers up and see what there playing at.. can i call them for you and yell?
try elephant mate, ive had 3 shhh but 3 claims against me and they are really quite cheap.
or norwich union where good aswell.
All your answers possibly
click Me
just 1 claim, apparantly my fault (stupid backwards woman driver grrrr), just the 2 cars, my car was written off even though the damage was fixable. Tried about 50 companies online so far and the best quote I got is just over £9,000 fully comp, or £2,300 without even mentioning the crash! GAH
Man thats bad!
But, from what you are saying, are Liverpool Victoria the cheapest quote you have had?
As all insurance companies use the same "format" to calculate their insurance, so this would be why it has increased.
Hope ya get it sorted mate, I am assuming you have tried Tesco?
Jesus
its enough to put you off the road.
Its awkward when your young.
And your always chasing that age thing.
Have you tried Sheila's wheels ?
Just speak with a high toned voiceAny chance of you becoming the named (Second Driver) on your car?
Get your pops to insure it and you
as a named driver.
Keep trying mate,
there has to be someone out there
that can get you a better quote.
FFS what a pain in the arse that is
As webby mentioned, some companys are now doing no claims for named drivers if it would maybe cheaper to go on your parents policy...
Maybe get a lower risk car...
Keep shopping, theres gotta be somewhere cheaper than £4k - Im not surprised they have
pleasure in giving that quote, they must be making a packet!!!
Good luck matey, sound like you might need it ...
Almost makes me happy to be old
One thing Joe, maybe you should put your number plate back on? (if you havnt already)
Cos you
really dont want another 3 points if the police decide to give you some for it, as it would increase you premium further.
i am gutted for you mate, what a nightmare, they are a p*ss take these insurance companies.
I'll be putting my plates back on, looks like I'll have to sell my car within the 2-3 weeks I have left.
Izzy phoned around the companies I already tried to see if she could get a cheaper quote. The cheapest one was £2500 TPFT with YesInsurance I think.
Been looking at 50cc - 125cc bikes. £30 a month insurance TPFT!!!! That would mean I'd be saving around £200 a month, if not more, as the insurance is cheaper and the petrol costs are amazing (i.e. 100+ miles on a full tank (£10)).
I was speaking to Dazza and he recommended stating that it is kept in a garage and perhaps think about getting a cat1 alarm fitted.
Havn't tried it in anyone elses name yet as I don;t really have anyone elses name to put it in. Mum doesn't drive and I aint spoke to my dad in years lol. Don't speak to my family either lol.
So yeah, either walking, cycling or a 125cc bike for me during the winter months, cas I refuse to use public transport.
Awwwww Joe man, thats so bad!
A do hope you can sort things out somehow.
Try getting some quotes for a different car, saxo's or fiesta or simillar.
Bikes arnt fun in the winter mate, trust me.....
Yeah, Clio's, 106's and Fiesta's in particular are both cheap to buy and insure. The insurance group on your Beemer must be 10/11, so bear in mind most of these cars are only around group 3 - 5. Should be able to save yourself a decent amount, the only thing is, would you go to a smaller car lower sized engine? Don't forget though, if you are okay with a smaller car, although yours is a 1.6 pushing 100BHP, a smaller car is lighter and therefore there prob wont be much difference in speed between yours and a 1.4 small car pushing say 80BHP. A small car is a different world to a saloon though.
306DTurbos are group 5. IIRC they are nearly 100bhp too
Might even save you some fuel money with being a derv as well
Yeah, I like the 306TD's, they are also cheap as chips. Only thing with them is they are not overly fast for what they are (92BHP but slower then most 1.4 petrols) and to be honest their fuel economy isnt much better then petrols.
But I think they are very smart and their features are good. Engines are quite strong, although I have heard in a few places they are "prone" to head gasket failiures, not sure how true this is though.
Up the boost a tad and they shoud see over 100bhp
Think is the diesel engine is heavier than a 1.4 petrol which makes them a little more "sure footed" on the roads, and they have the torque to pull them round
MPG is around 45ish, but when boi diesel is 80p / liter, although their mpg doesnt change, the cost per mile is 20% cheaper
Joe tesco's and sainsburys are well cheap try them online.
yeah joe,get a small hatch with a diesel engine, the smaller the better. I think u can get a corsa with a 1.5 diesel cant u,if thats not cheap to insure then nothing is lol. Also, have u tried a fiat panda (im sure theyre grp 1)
In response to most of your replies, these are the cheapest quotes I could be arsed finding cas it's getting me down lol.....
1.7 VAUXHALL ASTRA MERIT TURBO DIESEL 1996
FULLY COMP: £4,518
TPFT: £4,084
Peugeot 306 1.9 Turbo Diesel Sports Edition
TPFT: £3,789 (£200 theft excess)
1997 PEUGEOT 1.9 LX TD
TPFT: 3,789.44 (£200 theft excess)
2001 FIAT BRAVA 80 SX 1.2
FULLY COMP: £5,212.33
2001 PEUGEOT 206 1.4 GLX 5dr
FULLY COMP: £5,995
FIAT PUNTO 2000 1.2 (most rediculous quote for such a small car)
FULLY COMP: £4,832.84
1994 VAUXHALL COMBO LS DIESEL WHITE 1.7
£1890 (Could be an idea at that price!)
1997 FORD ESCORT ENCORE 1.3 RED 5dr
TPFT: £3,505
1992 SUZUKI SAMURAI SPORT 1.3
TPFT: £2,826.36
third party: £2,793.96
So bike it is then!
btw, fiat panda.....I'm not THAT desparate!
ahhh just got another a quote on the suzuki samurai sport, £1441.04 TPFT with a 10 month bonus accelerator (whatever that is!) so its now a choice between a 4x4, a van perhaps (thinkin of really cool corsa mods for it lol), and a bike.
You need to look at older cars mate, the insurance is always higher with new cars.
Look around pre-1994 for lower insurance, the same age as your beemer would be good.
ok, i'll try again for round 2 tomorrow lol
Good luck matey!

Very true get a mk1 fiesta. Mk3 escort dont see many about and if its early enough should get free tax (i think).
The Saxo's are too new Jay, they were from 1996 and also the 1.1 is a group 4 .... the same as many small 1.4's.
My mate has a 1998 1.1 and she is paying a lot more for that then I am for 1.4 Clio.
corsa combi van, wouldnt a 3 door with an EVEN smaller engine be cheaper.anything under 2k wud be a bargain matey. ur age with NO NCB is a real problem for insurance companys
It always helps to put your dad or mum on your policy. For some reason, it drops. Mine went down 50 quid (!). I can't believe those prices though, can't you get on your parent's insurance or something? It's depressing!
how old are you joe? as when my missus had a crash 3yrs ago, three claims (one including me as i had half my ear cut off
)she got 5 points for danderous driving, she paid 1200 on a 1.1 mk3 fez bomb, the next year she got a mk4 fiesta 1.25 75bhp iirc and that was a grp6 insurance she paid 980.
think classic if you do decide to go for a car, 6k milage per annum, even a mk4 escort xr3i is now considered classic.
for a scooter tho a 125 gilera runner is a great scooter 55mph wheelies
Havn't tried it in anyone elses name yet as I don;t really have anyone elses name to put it in. Mum doesn't drive and I aint spoke to my dad in years lol. Don't speak to my family either lol.
Good idea, but theres your answer Miek
Ah!
Classics are the way to go though, on classic insurance you'll be paying at least 500 quid on something from the 70's.
but dont you have to be over 21 to have classic insurance?

I was just thinking the same, I don't know if I'd be able to get classic insurance at 17/18yrs with my Mini...
the older the car doesn't always mean its cheaper, my insurance actually went down £200 going from a civic 96 1.4 to a civic 02 1.6 vtec sport. quinn direct seem to be the cheapest i can find
cheers for the suggestions guys, but I've tried everything. The only thing which are cheap are 4x4's. I mean, I got quoted just over £1000 with a 3.5 V8 Land Rover Discover (Gas Converted). A Massive Car/Tank, and yet really cheap insurance....why so? Does anyone know?
I think if my car doesnt sell, I'll garage it and try and get a 4x4 or maybe walk about for a bit until I can afford the insurance again on my beemer.
