I picked up the RS yesterday. Drove to Silverstone in the pop, managed about 35 to the gallon which surprised me. Got there for half 11 then swapped had din dins and headed home. Took our time, managed about 40 to the gallon (after learning not to go onto / resisting the boost) and got home about 3. Only used a bit over a quarter tank.

Then proceeded to use over half a tank going from mine to stanlow to buckers, then to stanlow and home again. smile

Im really made up with it. Its a brilliant spec and although i dont know the power it feels like more then he said, considorably. I was chasing after a tuned turbo supra yesterday (unkown spec, defo turbo though) and i was having to back off.

Heres a quick list anyway:

1600 cvh turbo.
Garrett T3 stage 1 hybrid.
-31 actuator set at 1bar.
Kent cvh 34 cam.
pace double capacity intercooler.
Big valve head.
Ported and polished.
Spax adjustables all round.
S2 discs 261mm up front, rear disc conversion with cosworth calipers and high performance pads all round.
LSD and uprated organic clutch.
Full stainless exhaust.

Itll be getting dyno'd soon to see how many powers its making and if theres any holes or dead spots but it does feel like it. Id be interested to see how much the power spikes when the turbo kicks in, its pretty vicious.

Short term plans are to carpet it leaving the rear seats out. Fit original doorcards and front stereo stuff, no silly speakers for me. Then a good service etc and a good tidy up. Boost controller and turbo timer. Long term is a big front mount and injectors and some form of hybrid T34 or something along those lines then ill get anti-lag and launch control. Knowing me though itll be gone in 6 months for something else.

Pictures too.

Looks in good nick. Not a fan of escorts from mk III onward tho to be honest, and I feel like I must be the only one. I liked the Ford Super Escort MkIII thing they tried to introduce into rallying, but that backfired, as the Audi Quattro with its 4wd dominated....rendering the escort pointless.

Cheers guys. Might be at the rock tonight if anyone wants to say hello.

Those RS1700's where mad. 1700 BDG Turbo i think. Capable of 600bhp plus, same as the RS200 engine.

I wasnt really a fan of mk3's myself but when i saw them at shows and such i started to warm to them, and when i saw an RS1600i a while ago i turned. Ive always been a big fan of RS Turbo's anyway, just never thought id be able to afford one until i was about 30.

I picked it up from Trax on sunday yeah.

If im not working overtime i may well make an appearance at the next meet.

Im too lazy to clean cars. Ill probably just go into one of those automatic ones. Never been in one before as the paint on all my cars is a touch delicate but this one isnt so much, plus itll be a bit of a novelty for me smile

Im going for those 7x15 wheels on passionford. Theyre period which is what im after styling wise.

If i dont like them i can always put the originals back on.

Ive been spying some nice team dynamics rims too. The pro race 1.2, in black with a blue rim.

Ill see how it goes eh.

Im not sure where im going with this car anymore. Its tuned to the point where any more power would mean plenty of cash, and the whole point of this car was to spend that money and make more power then i will with this car. Ill keep it for a bit, i do really really like it but im looking around aswell. I want a 2wd saff cossie but ive got no chance being 21. Ive looked at s14's, and ive always liked them but theyre not doing it for me at the moment. So for now im not spending any cash till i know what im up to.

Took some pictures the other night though. Having a play with the settings on my camera really, but heres the best ones.

Fitted my boost gauge yesterday. Pretty pleased with myself as im no electrician. Had a little problem with some wires though. I used the old wires off the stereo and everytime i turned the lights on the gauge went off. I couldnt work out why and i was getting a good circuit all the way to the pod. So i did more testing and worked out that the earth was actually getting power when the lights where on so the gauge couldnt earth. So i had to find another earth but then its been fine.

Found out its making about 17psi and its not trailing off. Ive wound it up to 6000rpm and it doesnt tail off and the extra 500rpm before the limiter doesnt get used often even if it does tail off.

Ive also put the bad running down to a worn cam. If it gets any serious abuse for more then 10 seconds i think the follower must be moving around and its sticking somehow and getting tappetty so a new cam shall be ordered soon. Not sure which one to go for though, i like the one in it though so i might go for another.

Wise choice not to spend much more on it though until you know what you want.

Cheers Phil. But as Joe said its best not to spend cash on it at the moment. Im not sure what im doing next but im probably keeping this car. However what im going to do to it i dont know. Theres four things im looking at doing.

Number 1 is to make the RST faster. Expensive but probably worth it, although ill probably never get the money back. Im not tight, i just see cars as an investment. I worked out the RST cost me £2100.

Number 2 is to keep the RST and build a drift car. Something ive longed to do before i was old enough to drive. Im in a situation where i might be able to afford it and think its worth taking the opportunity.

Number 3 involves bying myself something a bit newer for an everydayer. Cars ive looked at are Square headlight Vectra 2.0 Turbo's, Lexus IS200's and new Toyota Avensis 2.4's. Of course keep the RST.

Number 4 is to sell the RST on and buy something faster. Only problem is that i dont know what. Ive always fancied an S13 or S14 but something holding me back. Scoobies are too common and Evo's too expensive to insure.

And Joe, im right now getting ready to head down there smile
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 9th Nov 2008 8:00pm
Little update.

I havnt really been up to much. Ive only been using it once or twice a week now due to the work van.

I lost my alt belt the other day so i wasnt pleased. Went down to M53 Ford on the bus to sort a new one and sort a cam belt too.
Was expecting to pay silly money cause i wanted to use genuine parts, but it was about £8 for the alt belt, £20 for the cam belt. So i thought id be clever and drive down there on the battery and fit it when i got there. Got me there no problem but it wouldnt start again. Itd turn over but not enough to catch and fire. So went into the garage after a booster and the lads werent interested. It was a Saturday though and time to go home so couldnt blame them. So i had to call the AA up. Great fella too. Always had good expierences with them. This guy used to live in Germany, and had a 2dr cossie, a 2wd saff cossie and a 4wd saff cossie at the same time, imported from the UK cheap when they couldnt hold their prices. Lucky sod.

One of my sidelight bulbs is on the way out, so instead of ordering a pair ive ordered a set of hid lookalike dip/mains and some nice sidelights. Nothing wrong with the current ones but i do muss the ultrabright 100w'ers i had in the pop.

When you getting the new cams??
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 9th Nov 2008 9:40pm
Dont know yet. It seems fine at the moment, and touch wood theres been no problem for quite a while. When it starts to get noticably bad ill sort it then.

Glad your keeping this you just dont see many of them about.

Fitted the bulbs today in the dark. Had to repair some of the wiring in the dark though. The old bulbs where odd too, one 130w/90 the other 60w/50 so that explains the wonkyness. The new ones arent any brighter but very much clearer and whiter.

Got a harness too. Its going on the drivers side for now of course. But once i fit my bucket seat its going in the passenger side and im fitting a 4 pointer.

Im working this weekend too so i can buy a turbo timer and ive seen a fancy shift light / rev counter too. Ill be getting an air / fuel gauge too and an oil pressure as well as a clock. I like clocks in cars.

The main scheme with this car though is that im not doing any permanent mods. I want to be able to return it to original spec.

Ive got a few pictures to post that ive taken over the last few weeks and havnt posted.

Fitted my harness today. Took it out to weigh it up then thought i could just do it there. Literally took 2 minutes using the old rear seatbelt bolt holes.

Ive decided im fitting my spare carbon bucket seat i got with my MK1 Cortina. Its a fancy FIA spec one but its well out of date. Its on a mk3/4 escort seat rails anyways so im laughing. Got some blue caliper paint too aswell which ill get round to sorting out.

Ive seen a nice V8 MK2 Cortina though, and ive just been told ive got a 6 month extention on my contract so if i can sort it out i might go for it and keep the two cars. If not ill spend all my money on this one instead.

Heres pictures anyways. Im always taking pictures so theres about 20 of them.

Update.

Cars been sitting around for the past few weeks but ive fitted a few new things.

BOSCH Coil, New plugs, new dizzy cap and rotor arm. Also had the lifters out and had a look at the cam. All is well but the problem hasnt gone. Its actually far worse now. Next suggestion is the fuel pump, which leads me to the order ive just made.

Proper uprated fuel pump rated to 350bhp. Supposedly hard to come by, and i got the last one smile

[Linked Image]

While i was nosing around, i thought eh, why not?

Single pass FMIC to go with it.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Requires a small amount of trimming but it nothing i cant do. Mounts the the bumper mounts apparently. Comes with fans etc. I reckon ill leave the grille off like the second picture.
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 25th Jan 2009 5:04pm
I got my pump but it never solved it. Theres a lad coming round soon with some spares who might be able to sort it. If not theres another friend of my dads who is going to have a look. Im fed up of it now, the only things i can think of are the ecu's or the injectors.

But you drifting lads have done my head in. As ive mentioned before ive always wanted a skidder. I Love the RS too much though, and cause its a dream car i dont want rid. It does everything i expected of it, but ten times better, the only thing it misses is proper wheel drive. Im gauranteed work now, no redundencies because my company doesnt want to loose skilled workers so i can hopefully afford two cars. So im going to bite the bullet and buy a second car smile

Looking at mk2 cortinas and S13's. Some rules would apply to both, gutted, decked, fat dish (13"'s on mk2, 15"s on s13), loaaadss of strech and exhaust scraping the deck. OSF scene calls it south london look. Im heading towards the s13 because of the powers. Im not after tons of it, i dont believe power is the answer, but the cortina would only have a 1600 so tops 90bhp as standard. It weigh sub 800kg's but still. Plus the solid axle and leafs dont help. The s13 is a better base, but if a mk2 pops up thats right, i may go for it.
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 26th Jan 2009 10:24pm
go for it wink
Posted By: chris bmw M3 Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 28th Jan 2009 9:27am
If its for skiddin, forget the Cortina as the drift-orientated-bits will be far too expensive...An s13 or s14 will drift fairly well straight out of the box!
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 28th Jan 2009 7:26pm
Well you cant buy drift bits for a mk2. You can buy tarmac rally parts though. All mk2 escort parts fit too, and i reckon, no, i know, minus engine/gearbox/diff itd be cheaper to build a cortina. Unfortunately a good enough engine and gearbox would equal a four figure sum so its counted out.

But the mk2 i had, on GT springs was a massively capable skidder in the wet. Chassis was more then up to it.
Posted By: chris bmw M3 Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 29th Jan 2009 7:41am
Try buying a 2 way diff for an old Ford cheap!! thumbsdown
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 29th Jan 2009 7:20pm
I know, but they cant be anymore expensive then kaaz or nismo stuff can they? Last time i looked they hovered around £600 or £400 for an ATB, but they dont lock enough. But id just weld it anyway.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 29th Jan 2009 8:06pm
Thing is Dave an old classic will be fine for wet roundabouts and Oulton Park, but for some real drifting, ie drifting in 3rd and 4th gear at 70+ mph your really going to struggle power wise. Ive heard people talking about 350-400bhp min to get the wheels spinning at that speed and with a classic car and engine thats not going to happen frown

All depends how serious you are - you could drift Oulton in a 318i with a welded diff its that slippery.... think
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 29th Jan 2009 10:35pm
[Linked Image]

Proofs.

And hes not exactly struggling for power in the next two videos.

He has an XE, built for reliability, no more then 230bhp. I think you seem to forget though, 800kg's. Not 1200kg or 1400kg or more like the rb26 powered s15's or big cefiros and such.

I agree with what your saying, but disagree that you need big power to drift. You need skill and a bloody big pair of balls. Like the D1GP guys in 200bhp AE86's chasing 600bhp plus Skylines.
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 29th Jan 2009 10:39pm
And i forgot to say. Im going S13 anyway. In talks with a lad now and ive seen one or two others. Ill see how it goes. Not rushing into anything.
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 29th Jan 2009 11:06pm
Im not saying it cant be done, but I recon theres £20k+ in that escort wink
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 29th Jan 2009 11:15pm
Thats why im going for an S body. I dont see the point in dropping so much money into something i can do for less. Although its not as expensive as people think they are. A big point for me though is if , no, when i have a bump itll be easier and cheaper to repair, especially if its just bumpers and such.

That car gets rebuilt every year bigger and better. Its had more then £20 spent on it but only because he wanted too, it doesnt need it. Budget £4000 for a good shell, £4000 for a good XE conversion or mad pinto or even yb and another £5000 for suspension and fabrication and chassis and youve got a sorted car, and it can be done cheaper too. Its a lot of money yeah, but some people think they cost silly money to build and it doesnt, you could easy spend £13000 on a S14 drift car.
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 1st Feb 2009 10:15pm
Im not having much luck with these S13's. Everyone i ask about has been either stripped or the seller has changed their mind. But there is someone who has contacted me with info of a tasty car.

Info will be revealed as and when necesery but the S1 might be up for sale if i like this new car enough.

Going to look at it on saturday.

Hopefully, if i like, deposit goes down and i should be collecting the car sometime in the week smile
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 7th Feb 2009 10:39pm
Went to see the s13 today. Made up with it. Going to collect it on thursday.

Brief spec is 273bhp@ 1bar low boost, goes up to 1.5bar, forged rods and pistons with balanced crank, twin plate clutch, sorted suspension and all the usual extras. Proper spec list when the car comes.

Whats the story with standard VLSD's? Do they work at all? I want to keep it and get used to the car before i weld it up, but if its no good i may aswell weld it. Can you skid on them?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 7th Feb 2009 10:47pm
VLSD are pretty good smile

What turbo is it running?

Ill have a welded diff for sale very soon. Im taking the welded one off the race car and refitting a VLSD as it just wants to go sideways with the welded jobbie on raftl
Posted By: Dave100e Re: Dave100e : RS Turbo - 7th Feb 2009 10:54pm
Its a pulsar turbo. Would that be a T28H? He said its a hybrid too, i presume thats the H bit.

I might be interested in the welder? Ill try it without first. If it can hold a skid without then theres no point changing it. Ive no intention of doing any 100mph entries and transitions anytime soon, if ever smile

Forgot to mention. The RS is half heartedly for sale. Im asking £3200 or £3500 with a brand new FMIC and HKS turbo timer to go with it.

But if anyone on here wants it ill take £3000 or £3250 with the extras. Ill take offers on that too, but ovno. Hopefully the problem will be sorted soon.

Thats kinda Stage 3 then with that turbo - it will have bigger injectors (maybe 444's) and a Z32 MAF with some management happy

Ok, so i might be keeping the Essy then.

My money situtaion isnt as bad as i thought, and after christmas a few keys things will happen. Im 22 in August, ill have 3 years no claims bonus and the money i borrowed to pay insurance on my card and the money i borrowed for the Datsun will be payed off.

I should be able to get insured on both cars for under £1200 so i may aswell. Ill then take the essy off to a bodyshop to get the work done to it and then get it resprayed and keep it as a show car. I can use the Datsun for something to abuse.

Im selling stuff i dont need such as old engines in the garden to pay for parts on the S13 and until Christmas im just going to start saving up like mad.

All i need to do is finish fitting the interior, fit a new battery and sort out the running problem which ive tracked to the AMAL valve so far. Fit the FMiC and the turbo Timer.

Im all excited now smile

I wish! As far as S1's go thats a proper sleeper, but its not exactly subtle. Imagine racing someone off the lights in that, squirming all over the road, with smoke coming from the rears, they wouldnt know what was going on.

Im 21 tony. Most places wont insure 'classics' until your 24 or 25. Thats my experience anyway from when i actually had classic cars, they wouldnt touch me.

i think ya doin the right thing by keepin the essy its a smart rare motor and look even more better once ya got all the work done to it.

Yeah. I hope im doing the right thing anyway. Its money tied up that doesnt need to be and ive been thinking of a momobike and itd be a healthy deposit on a street triple but then a bikes not an RS Turbo. Hard decision.

I might get the work done and then decide, ill be in a better position then. Im a bit tempted to turn it into a bit of a street racer aswell.

Im also in talks with a guy with another 100e with a Pinto. Not anywhere near as quick as my last one but in considerably better nick. Hes got bike carbs with it too but not fitted smile

I would be happy to swap it as at least the RS would be getting used and the 100e would be cheaper in every respect from insurance to the free tax. However ill be just as happy if it doesnt sell and i get to keep it. A win win i say smile

I fitted a new battery the other day but the starter was stuck. So today while all the cars where out of the drive i gave it a bump and its undone it.

So i go to start it and the dash light dont come on. But it does turn over twice. Dead battery. So its on charge now. I need to sort the alarm out. My Dads friend will come to have a look at it soon i think. Hopefully he can fix / bypass it so i can get it running and try to fix the engine fault.

I painted the new rocker cover too and been tidying and collecting parts for it again. Its getting there slowly, but its hard when your trying to spend as little as possible.

Bye Bye RS Turbo...

a guy and his lad came to see it today. I knew they wanted it straight away although they gave it a good once over.

I know itll be looked after so im happy.

now i just need to find something to spend the money on. Not the nissan, that takes enough of my money. Maybe a mk2 Fiesta Rs turbo or zetec.

I dont need two S13's mate, one is enough trouble.

I know, im split in two. Im sad its going, loved it to bits, but at the same time it means i can move on to something quicker and at least its going to get used from now on instead of going to waste.
