OH bought a Tom Tom last week. The below email has arrived. Firstly could it be a scam , secondly is it legal to have a device that detects speed cameras .Thirdly if not a scam and legal, is it worth doing do you reckon? ie accurate/reliable etc. Thanks for any info.

i can't comment on the legitimacy of the email, however something that lets you know where speed cameras are i'm fairly sure isn't illegal. some AA roadmap books have the locations of speed camera's on them and my girlfriend's dad has some USB stick type device in his car that beeps when a speed camera is coming up.

i suppose if civilians report to a central website where speed camera's are in their area then a map could in theory be drawn up as to the national location of speed cameras, they're in a big shiny yellow box ffs with ample warnings on signs that speed camera's are in use in the area, if you get caught by one then you only have yourself to blame for speeding.

I have had TomTom for a few years now and it came with speed cameras pre loaded, it alerts you when you are approaching them. You also get the opportunity to notify a new camera which is then updated by TomTom .

under freedom of information laws you are fully entitled to know where speed cameras are, the tom tom speed camera option is totally legitimate.

As Salmon states TomTom come with pre loaded information, such as speed cameras, The only additional cost is for live services if you havent already purchased them.

Ah, must be the live services bit theyre on about, because although we havent actually read the blurb yet , we must have the speed camera warning facility as its the latest model. Logically I I should have guessed it wasnt an offence, as knowing where they are through any method , would get the desired effect of a driver slowing down - I think Ive just got a bit into the habit of thinking they were used just to make money by trapping people!

I dont think we need anything more than what we seem to have then. Thanks everyone.

The lice service can be very handy, This has saved me hours on a number of journeys, It will inform you well in advance of any road blocks or delays on your journey. Depending on how far you travel depends if its worth it.

Dont think we cover enough miles in the UK to make it worth while, but will give it some second thoughts thanks , Truth.

It's worth bearing in mind that if you drive in europe some countries have outlawed any device indicating the placement of cameras. The device is seized and the driver heavily fined. This includes the use of mobile phones.

My Tom Tom is about three or four years old and it had the speed camera's already loaded at the time. I frequently get these emails but have never bothered to update it and it has been fine.

It makes me wonder if these databases give you a false sense of security, as they don't cover mobile camera sites.

I always find the warning signs, bright yellow cameras and markings on the road a dead giveaway as to where fixed cameras are!

Most sat navs have audible warnings built in when you exceed the speed limit for a certain road, so just make sure you have that enabled if you're struggling.

Thanks everyone . OH has more basic irritations on his mind now, with trying to program the bl**dy thing. I heard him this morning giving the computer woman a right bad tempered loud voiced mouthful after she said in a snooty voice " I dont understand , please put in your destination" . After 3 times doing it, and her three times 'not understanding' she suddenly says almost seeming to sound exasperated - "Turning off voice control" by which point OH has gone scarlet and sweaty with rage and the Sat nav looked set to go out the window!!!
Happy days.

Voice control does seem hit and miss.Best not to use it if you really want to get somewhere and also best not to use post codes as they can be too "general". I don't know if that is true of all sat navs but certainly has led me slightly astray at times with TomTom. The voice control is good fun if you are bored or want a laugh in the evening, very interesting seeing the results of your voice search.

Ah, right Ill tell him to try without her interference, and to just put in all BUT the postcode .Thanks
