Hopefully going up to Sheffield on Thursday to swap my car for another car. The car I'm getting isn't taxed, and mine runs out at the end of the month (ie Saturday).

Does anyone have any recommendations for one day insurance, and whether this will work on getting the car taxed? I'm thinking of swapping my insurance over on the day, but don't want to have mine being void while I'm driving it, for obvious reasons. The car I'm hopefully getting is 1989, and one-day insurance often doesn't cover this age (however 'cherished' is between 1950 and 1985 - I don't understand why this is?)

I've done this type of thing too often and it always fails!

Esure.com do stupid policys, carnt see you being able to tax it like that though. Trade policy is what you need, saves a lot of money.

I'm going to sack the whole idea off, it's too much hassle, I know something will go wrong on the day!

To get tax it has to be insured on the 1st of the month if the tax is done in advance. Rules might have changed though.

It is a non-sensical mess all this tax and insurance bit.

Also as from January, a car has to be SORN'd if it hasn't got insurance.

I think the rules on taxing are that the documents have to be correct at that time.

I've taxed cars on the last day of the MoT, and Insurance can only be checked then, as it can be done online now so it has no way of checking if you're going to cancel it the next day, or if you're going to renew it if you're on the last few days of your policy.

If you do the swap over with your policy make sure that you keep a note of everyone you speak to, check on the askmid website to see if the car is listed as insured, that will give you an idea if it's going to flag on a police ANPR camera.

I've heard of people taxing a car with one day insurance. It seems it's up to the person in the post office ... ?
I'm going to give it a miss, I'll probably end up having the car seized or something. I remember when I bought a car without tax, mot or insurance (2001!), how things change!

You need a trade policy Dave, I don't have problems when I buy with no Mot or tax. Then again my boss let's me use his trade plates to cover me for no tax but when I have been stopped in the past with no tax (if I've just bought a car) the police are generally alright once you explain your a trader.

You do need to carry your policy with you though and be polite if you get pulled. (it is their job after all).

I'm going to sort it out eventually, do you just pay one whole whack and it covers you for the year?

You can do that or you can pay via installments.
My 1st year of a trade policy I paid in full but they canceled it halfway through via an error on their behalf, I've paid via installments since then, safer that way wink
I have demo cover, I can have unlimited sales cars on it and 30 of my own cars with value of upto £35k

Lv, they have taken over highway insurance.
