Having just got the bad news that one of our cars cam belt has gone and has caused £1600 worth of damage (it's a renault scenic y reg), we are now down to one car, a 2 litre passat (02 reg). Can anyone tell me how often this car's cam belt needs changing? It was done Nov 2007 along with the water pump. How long till it needs it doing again? It has done 25k between the cam belt change and now.

Give it another 25 bud, but you can leave it up to 60 without worry.

lol.

phone round for an engine, you may need an ecu too and your keys reprogramming so add a couple of hundred on top wink

Anything is better thn 1600-was considering scrapping the renault but with the scrappage allowance scheme in full swing can't imagine getting anything for it without buying a new car.

Depending on the damage you may get away with just fitting a 2nd hand head rather than swapping the whole motor think

withthat If you want it done cheap, give me a pm wink

I got the low down on what needs doing:-

cambelt kit £100
water pump £ 65
antifreeze £ 10
camshaft pulleys £170
head skim(?) £200
bolts and gaskets £ 65 total parts £610

labour 15 hours

Is this reasonable for a snapped cam belt with 3 out of 4 valves gone?
Posted By: _Ste_ Re: Cam Belts - 24th Jan 2010 11:41pm
WTF? omg £200 for a head skim?

I can get that done for £20

Where did you get the quotes for the parts?

get onto this lad, you cut the middleman out and goto the parts dealer yourself.
Senars or partco i use, compare the prices 1st on both, theres e-bay too but then you have to wait for the parts.

Get a secondhand head if you can like st beaker said, theres a place in our yard that skims heads for me for £20 so i can sort that, then get someone to fit it all for you, you`l save a fortune doing it this way smile

He still has a buisines to run mate, a lot of peeps think of time as money, so if he`s/they are doing your car, they could be doing someone elses.
It`s like you owning a tv shop, your paying say £400 for a tv, but a member of your family want it for £350, you`ll lose money by helping that member out, its nothing personal, its business wink
Posted By: bobi1 Re: Cam Belts - 25th Jan 2010 12:09am
I understand that, I'm not one to ask for favours. What I don't understans is he appears to be asking more than what peeps on here think is right. Don't want to dismiss him out of hand cos he's the only onw who has actually seen the engine so far but if the parts for the job cost £600, is $1000 for labour reasonable?
Posted By: _Ste_ Re: Cam Belts - 25th Jan 2010 12:17am
Wouldn`t like to say/wouldn`t know because i do all my own stuff.
If your worried about costs why don`t you get the haynes out? raftl

Give yourself a try of DIY mechanics? We all help each other out on here, if you come stuck there will be plenty of peeps to give a helping hand.

Seriously though, if you need a quote, you supply the parts, i`ll get the head skimmed for you and see one of the lads from kwik fit for you for a qoute, let me know smile

Didn't think so. Ah well, such is life.
Posted By: bobi1 Re: Cam Belts - 13th Mar 2010 4:50pm
Took a while to get the job finished but it cost £400 in total, would've been £500 but the guy knocked a hundred off for taking so long to finish it (mind you he did say he had been in hospital).

I'm gonna take great pleasure in getting back to the guy who quoted £1600 for the job.

Posted By: DavidB Re: Cam Belts - 23rd Mar 2010 6:25pm
I know mechanics did around £35 per hour on labour in 2004 (the last time I used a garage for non-service maintenance). £1000 is a lot for a day's work, and if they can't do it in a day ... ?

Why are there so many garages trying to shaft people out of their cash?
Posted By: Sanchez Re: Cam Belts - 23rd Mar 2010 6:59pm
Its wrong isnt it, I really cant belive they are all price fixing. The one that gets me is an MOT GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Posted By: DavidB Re: Cam Belts - 23rd Mar 2010 7:16pm
I kept a quote from someone I worked with from a garage in Hoylake to fix an ARB link and a suspension top-mount, and refit the indicator lens (it had fallen out of the wing before the MOT). 600 quid, I kept the quote for LOL's!
