Lamborghini has launched the most potent version of the Murciélago to date – the fearsome LP670-4 SuperVeloce. The SV gets four-wheel drive and 661hp, giving it a 0-60mph time of under 3.2 seconds - 0.2 seconds faster than the LP640 - and a 212mph top speed.

The car is understood to be a last hurrah for Lamborghini's flagship and enjoys a weight saving of 100kg and a 30bhp power boost. The carmaker is calling it an ‘exceptionally purist and even more extreme’ version of the mighty LP640 and a new aero package differentuates it from the standard car.

The V12 makes its maximum power at 8000rpm and peak torque of 487lb ft at 6500rpm. There is a new front and rear design and a large rear spoiler, as well as a transparent engine cover and a ‘noble, flat and extremely wide’ exhaust that is a complete redesign.

Inside it is ‘purist and minimalist’, with carbon fibre and Alcantara to minimise weight. There are bespoke carbon buckets inside to further reduce weight. Only 350 SVs will be built, according to Lamborghini, and production will span from May this year to April 2010.
