Hi AW.

I'm in need of some advice. I have recently purchased a 998 unleaded head (Cam4810) for my Mk4 850. At closer inspection it looks to have had a problem with a leak on the head cylinder gasket. Is it useable with a light block sand across the surface, or is a skimming required?

Here are the pics:

Where locally can I get it skimmed and for what price?

Thanks in Advance

Personally, I'd get it skimmed.

I think I'm right in saying, you'll probably need a thicker gasket to keep the compression ratio the same too.

There is a place just after the 4 bridges called CLM Engineering on the units on Kelvin Road, they should be able to do it.

There is also Birkenhead Engines on Cathcart Street.

Not sure of a price though, so best to ring or go in and get a quote.

StuyMac or turbo_stu might be able to help more.
The place by PECO do head skimming don't they, is that the same place as joe said ???

Okay will ring up tomorrow for some quotes. You don't happen to have the numbers do you?

With having it skimmed, the compression ratio will increase, thus performance will also be increaed. Problem is, I dont know if its been skimmed before. We'll soon see.

Thanks for your help

d'oh, its not CLM Engineering, it's Merseyside Engine Parts & Repair Specialist - Their phone number is 0151-639 2259

I knew it was one of them units on Kelvin Road.

Quick search on google - Birkenhead Engine Centre on Brook St, 0151 647 8383

They might be able to tell you if it has been skimemd before?

Skim smile

If the head is marked and you dont know the history, its better to be safe than sorry.

Id also refit with a std gasket, a skim should effect the compression that much, and even so, a slightly higher comp ratio on a N/A car is a good thing wink

Skimming is usually around £50 smile
