Im thinking of going to buy a car tomorrow but by the time i get down there, there wont be any post offices open to tax it. will i be OK driving it home without as i have only just bought it? I don't want to ask the guy to tax it incase i get there and i don't like it. or what are my options?

IFAIK, you will have to tax it.

You can phone them up instead on 0870 850 4444

you will need the 16 digit reference number printed in the yellow box on the front of your V11 reminder or the 11 digit reference number shown on the front of your Registration Certificate and your vehicle registration number and your debit or credit card details

How far out of Tax is the car?

IIRC there is still a "grace" period, so if it ran out at the end of Feb you should be Ok.

Any older than that, then get the seller to tax it at cost? Go Earlier and tax it yourself?

I don't think the grace period works any more IIRC ?
Because when you buy them now there time stamped with a date.
Good one to check up on though.

I only though it because I know people who have left cars 2-3 weeks before retaxing, and not got fines....

What if your on holiday when it runs out etc....

Best bet it to get the seller to tax the car? Is it anything special? Anything over a £500 car and I think Id expect some tax on it - Id at least expect the seller to offer tax at cost though.... think

Good point there stuy. ( Get them to tax it at cost )

But the argument could be with the holiday one,
that you can tax it 2 weeks before?

I done mine online and i got it the 6th Jan for FEB lol
I kept my old one in the window until the turn of the
month just to save any dumb questions lol

unofficially..you get about a months grace....if the tax hasnt been paid or the vehicle sorn...then you get fined..
if you tax it say two weeks late..then you pay the back tax anyhow...
if its just just out of date ie end of feb...u will be ok.

just go get it, they'll only charge you for back dated tax smile
