DTurbo is the sensible option, G5 insurance, easy to modify to enter the same performance window as the XSi. If you want summit stellar, go for the GTI-6, but G15 insurance, high running and maintenance costs. But otherwise, swerve the XSi, waste of money (G12 insurance and high running costs) all round compared to the DTurbo.

Imho, I think the P1 looks better then the P2/3, more agressive.

Bad Bits:

Needs Head gasket

Small patch of primer on front bumber (see pic)

N/S Front corner of bonnet discoloured...i think someone has tryed to spray with a can

Thats interesting... HG not too much of an issue, just a few days work if you aint done one before.

Decent price for it, a garage could do the HG for £250 but if the head is porous its a different story.

Ive never been a big fan of the 406 Coupe meself, dunno why just too plane looking, maybe a bit too Peugeot looking lol. They got lazy with the design on that one. But the 306 was the last car they designed themselves anyway.

Buy it, fix it up, drop a 1.3 turbo in it, follow Stu's guide on how to do it, and trust me, you wont want a 306 GTI-6 then, you will be hammering the lot of them!!

Go onnnnn get an R5 GT-Turbo!!

Or even better, a Clio Williams haha! Actually, a Clio 16v is only G12 insurance iirc and pretty much the same performance as the GTI-6 due it being lighter.

5 turbo, oh my god what a car. my mate bought one a few years ago, think the head was gone on it. when it went it really really went, only thing i didn't like was the very straight windscreen but i'd get over that.

Nout wrong with the looks of the Clio 16v or Williams... both from the same era, quite similar styling to the XSi/DTurbo/GTI-6, especially as the 306 design was based upon that of the 205.

The R5 is a bit of a dog, granted. smile

Posted By: Cali_16v Re: Pug 306..... - 19th Feb 2008 6:35pm
Why buy one with a failed HG, you buy it cheap but then your carless while it gets fixed and plus you pay for the work to be done which pushes the cost up. better off buying a work example
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Pug 306..... - 19th Feb 2008 6:37pm
Only if you can get it at a good price and it is decent everywhere else is it worth it. Otherwise, I wouldnt bother. At a good price though I would av it to either do meself as a project for a couple of months, or to get done quickly by a Garage.

As I said though, depends on what the rest of the car is like first.

My XR had 165,000 and was as sweet as dream in the engine when I sold it.

Did think it needed a clutch rebuild within the next 12 months though, hence I got rid.

save a packet dude go for tdi
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Pug 306..... - 20th Feb 2008 2:01am
Nah wtf man.... get a DTurbo!!!!

Dont go for a std 1.6 petrol... their slower then the DTurbo's (thats without a stage 1), higher insurance and more expensive to run!

No sense in that at all!!
Posted By: Civic_Coupe_Sean Re: Pug 306..... - 20th Feb 2008 2:04am
I just don't know if i could cope with the sound, I think the XSI/GTI-6 are out the question due to insurance raftl
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Pug 306..... - 20th Feb 2008 2:05am
Man fook the sound.... get a decent sound system soon drown out any derv noise trust me!!

In fact the XRDT and the DTurbo's have decent systems anyway as standard!
Posted By: Civic_Coupe_Sean Re: Pug 306..... - 20th Feb 2008 2:07am
Right then, My next question is, Can i have some info on both the XRDT and the DTurbo please ? Thats both mk1 and mk2 smile
Posted By: MattLFC Re: Pug 306..... - 20th Feb 2008 2:12am
Both the same matey, sum are quoted as 90bhp, some are quoted as 92bhp, same XUD engine though.

Widely regarded as the first decent mass production diesel engine. Detuned by Pug to allow the XSi a good advantage over them in tests, so they can be tuned easily.

XRDT/XTDT is more standard looking but still a bit more sportier then the likes of the XLDT, good features A/C, EW, ES etc, the DTurbo looks like the XSi but demands a higher price. The DTurbo had a few other subtle differences, possibly in setup although not 100% on that.

The XUD was replaced by the DW10 which is the HDi in like 1999 or 2000 cant remember. Better MPG, harder to tune.

What is best then, A mk1 or mk2 ? What year did the mk1 become the mk2 (face lift) ?

Cheers for all this info Matty mate thumbsup
Posted By: placidmaster Re: Pug 306..... - 20th Feb 2008 2:20am
xud started the revolution for pug, how many pugs was taxis in the uk till the 405 came along with the xud td came along, only thing to watch was the gearboxes as they were designed for the smaller petrol engines and were not the best at handling the torque, ask any high miler taxi pug owner how many boxes he has had ( i mean gearboxes lol)

Not Mk's mate, phases. The car never changed just the shell.

There was the Ph1, which is the first one. Ph2 was the next one, only a bit different from the Ph1 though, about 96 or summit. The Ph3 is the really modern one that lost all the aggressiveness... that was about 98 or 99.

smile
Posted By: Civic_Coupe_Sean Re: Pug 306..... - 20th Feb 2008 2:33am
It was just a face lift wasn't it from the ph1 to the ph2 ? Lights, Grill etc ?

Witch is best for power etc etc ?

On the Ph1 and Ph2, the 2 is better for reliability "slightly"... over time they found a few things they cud make better. All the same power.

Almost all the Ph3's are DW10's so they dont come into it.

smile
Posted By: placidmaster Re: Pug 306..... - 20th Feb 2008 2:41am
td, cheaper insurance, cheaper for garage work, more parts available second hand, overall much cheaper to run and most important thing, its derv powered so has the low down torque for pulling away well hard from the lights and also because of the torque u spend less time changing gears, valuable if u spend most time driving in town
Posted By: placidmaster Re: Pug 306..... - 20th Feb 2008 2:42am

Not all of them do. Its pot luck if you got a Bosch or a Lucas fuel pump.

The Bosch are fine, the Lucas will break as they use the fuel for lubrication.

The DW10 isnt the best for it either, the XUD with the Bosch likes it upto 75% mix.

I don't know nuffin about td's so i need someone to put me in the picture on running them etc etc and what mods you can and can't do smile

That link i gave you sean a few pages ago have a look on there that should answer some questions.

You can even call the derv doctor and get a dump valve fitted (£200)

i owned a ph1 306 up until christmas.

i was running about 120 bhp and had a FMIC, boost turned up 2 19psi, BMC airfilter, exhaust and fuelling 2 match.
unfortunatley it went boom due 2 a blown piston but other than taht was a great car and amazing on fuel even with a few extra mods.

but u cnt chip a ph1 iirc, as the engines are mechanically driven :s

raftl Don't bother... DD is good, but dump valves on Derv is just a money spinner, more likely to decrease performance rather then increase performance.

You can't chip an XUD, ie. the DTurbo. You can chip the DW10, but then you can manually tune it. A chip on a derv offers much better performance gain's then a petrol, but it's still gonna cost £300+.

If you want a pro stage 1 tune, DD will do it for around £110 including a roller run or two iirc.
