I have had alot of problems with heat shields rattling against the exhaust and the latest one, which i got honda to take of cause i couldnt reach it was the one above the Cat.
I have been charged £40 for them to take it of and advised that i must replace it as it is important.
Can i get away without it, or should i take their advice?
Is the cat you mean under the flooring?
Not the down pipe ?
After the Down pipe i think your meaining?
I dont know for sure, as its there for a reason i guess.
How much would they charge to fit a new one?
Then you could go back if it rattles again.
I dont run any heat sheilds on my exhaust, again because they generally start to rattle.
Turbo exhausts get hotter than N/A exhaust, and Ive never had a problem
there is still a rattling noise, as though it is still there.
wouldn't suprise me if the only cut part of it away.
need to jack it up and take a look.
is it the heat shield which is connected to the car body?
if so it would be advisable to keep it on. if you get some high temp silicone or the likes and seal it to the car body.
Heat shields stop the heat from warming up the body, that's it.
It took me about 1min to remove the bolts and rip it out. 40 quid is a rip off.
yes u've been ripped off and heat sheilds are a good idea, but they always rattle, weather u keep or not is ur option. IF the cat is anywhere near any meltable/flammable things then a heat sheild is an idea to stop these from melting or burning
In fact, removing them is a godsend in the winter.
Rip it off and throw it away, thats if it is the one bolted to the floor of your car.
They are simply more hassle than there worth.
If you still have a rattling noise it is one of two things.
1. Catalyst Collapsed internally
2. The catalyst has a metal shield attached to it, kinda like a heatshield but no gap between the catalyst casing and the outer shield. It is common for this to rattle.
The reason heat shields rattle is that the are subject to extreme heat changes, from sub-zero (in winter) to several hundred degree's within a few minutes. This causes the heat sheild to expand and contract every time you drive your car therefore they fracture and become loose.
£40 is a total rip off, when Autosafe was open we used to remove these daily and free of charge, how can you possibly charge someone for 2 minutes work ?
maybe u shud contest it rob mate. 40 quid for 10 minutes labour MAXIMUM is just silly
a mate o mine had that problem on a 52 plate type R from day 1, But i got stolen last week it got stolen so not his problem now
cheers for the info.
It looks as though i will have to put up with this for now.
the car flew through its last MOT so maybe it is just a heat shield on the cat as it is a rattling noise rather than an angry bee collapsed noise
