FIREFIGHTERS will stage a crash rescue in the car park of Morrisons in New Brighton today to drive home safety messages to motorists.

The demonstration, held to mark Brake Road Safety Week, will take place from 11am at the venue in King's Parade.

The charity Brake is urging drivers to turn off their phones or put them in the boot as part of the Brake Road Safety Week 2013.

Station Manager Sean McGuinness, who works with firefighters in Wirral, said: "Fire crews will show the public the specialist hydraulic equipment they use which is sometimes needed to rescue people following crashes.

"It will be quite something to see and really help to highlight our work and Brake Road Safety Week. Our community fire prevention staff will also be on hand with information and to speak to the public.

"We rescue twice as many people from crashes on Merseyside's roads than we do from fires that start by accident in people's homes.

"Our safety messages are aimed at drivers, passengers and pedestrians and we are also highlighting the dangers that distractions can cause when driving through work during the year in schools across Merseyside and in the communities across Merseyside."

Great idea, shame they are weighed down by the fact the L driving fraternity can't teach people to drive on the roads but are only able to teach people to pass a driving test and teach the same ones to be at least a car distance from the line at a road junction, still can't understand the word "community" bandied about when the Fire Brigade is mentioned they have always been part of the "community", just as the Police used to be. ,
