can anyone actually define what homophobia is? In its simplest terms is it just fear (phobia) of homosexuals or fear of homosexuality.? Emphasis being on fear. Or is it just a term thrown at anyone who questions homosexuality
Hoping your event goes well and that educating on homophobia & transphobia is a worthy cause.

Can anyone tell me when we are likely to be educated on incest? e.g son having sex with mother or brother having sex with sister. Is that also something we need to be educated in? It would all seem a bit like being back in Greece or Rome thousands of years ago. International!

Im not sure if your actually in favour of Incest or just trolling...
As it's legal in some countries and not in others, that's a fair question.
Sounds like a fun event. I hope it is successful.

Not really as incest is illegal in this country.

Also I doubt it's a case of being 'educated on' it - it's not a recruitment drive. Just an event to highlight the fact that hate crimes are still prevalent and the effect they can have on people.
Yes, incest is illegal in this country and to be fair, homosexuality was (not so very long go) also illegal in this country, but we have accepted differences and adapted to the way we should behave toward minority groups. Therefore, should we accept incest or would anyone have a phobia about that too? At this point in time, I beleive there would be many.
There are many countries where homosexuality is still illegal and they in turn have difficulties and differences, in tolerance. So, an International Day Against a 'phobia' in a multi-racial society, will never be successful in certain countries, and with the internet being so accessible worldwide, we cannot control the behaviour and thought process of many if they are not like minded or are from different religious groups.
A National Day would, I think, have far more impact ,as it would relate to us as a nation with more intensity and coming together.
I know it's not a recruitment drive but it is 'Against' , which would indicate that an assumption about a large percentage of the International Community would need educating. If it's to create awareness to those who are already aware of the hate crimes of many, then there's little that Joe Bloggs can do other than confront those who are guilty of such actions. That, I don't think is a good idea.

Whats sad about asking a question? The very fact that such an event is planned is because some people feel the need to educate us. And as yet no one has answered the question?

Ive watched some gay pride marches and dont think some of them are doing themselves any favours by parading and flaunting semi naked leather clad. There are standards of decency that cross all sexualities and IMO some of these have been crossed

I thought your original question:- and here's a reminder to save people scrolling back .....

"can anyone actually define what homophobia is? In its simplest terms is it just fear (phobia) of homosexuals or fear of homosexuality.? Emphasis being on fear. Or is it just a term thrown at anyone who questions homosexuality? "

-- was a perfectly legitimate query ,fish, and an interesting one at that. AND not that straightforward to answer in my opinion . Maybe Im a bit naive but I didnt read anything critical into the question, so I fail to see why people are having a pop at you.

I had always presumed it was simply a 'dislike' of homosexual people, but your question prompted me to look further , and here is a quote from the Stonewall site

"The word homophobia was constructed by the heterosexual psychologist George Weinberg in the late 1960s. He used homophobia to label heterosexuals’ dread of being in close quarters with homosexuals as well as homosexuals’ internalised oppression. The word first appeared in print in 1969.

--and another from Proud2Serve (A British Armed Forces gay LBGT support group)

"Homophobia --The fear of homosexuality - in ourselves and/or in others

so, as Wikipedia wisely describes homophobia...

" Homophobia encompasses a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality"

So---Ive learned something.
