Shostakovich’s mighty Seventh Symphony — the Leningrad, a great rallying cry of defiance against the Nazis who besieged the city for 900 terrible days during the Second World War — is the commanding focus of this concert by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vasily Petrenko.

A lighter mood is set by the programme’s openers, John Adams’s The Chairman Dances — an “out-take” from his opera Nixon in China in which Chairman Mao dances a foxtrot — and the UK premiere of Enchantements oubliés by the Chinese-born composer Qigang Chen, the man behind the music at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.
