2012: CWT 50th birthday and
Wirral Tourism Year of Coast & Countryside

Events suitable for most ages except very young children.
Low mobility/wheelchair access marked #
All free except lighthouse tour (number 14). Donations will be welcome

WALKING WIRRAL'S COAST AND COUNTRYSIDE
Events from late winter to autumn. Natural history, usually combined with local history.
Shortish distances, but expected to last 1-2 hours with lots of stops to look at things.

1. Wednesday 15th February, 10.30am
New Ferry Shore: birds and shipping
Watch birds feeding at low tide, walk along past the fever hospital site, talk about history of
area including Great Eastern. No need to book.
Meet: Shorefields open space, New Ferry. SJ340857.

2. Sunday 11th March, 2pm #
Help plant 50 wild flowers at New Ferry Butterfly Park to celebrate the 50th birthday of
Cheshire Wildlife Trust.

Meet: New Ferry Butterfly Park, adjacent to Bebington Station car park, off Bebington Road,

3. Saturday 14th April, 2pm #
Help plant 50 wild flowers at Birkenhead Park wildflower meadow to celebrate the 50th
birthday of Cheshire Wildlife Trust.

4. Saturday 21st April, 2pm
Woodland management the traditional way.
Thornton Common and Thornton Wood.
See what hedge laying, coppicing, pollarding look like, done by Wirral Countryside
Volunteers.
Thornton Common is flat, but Thornton Wood has steep slopes.

5. Tuesday 24th April, 10am
Ancient woodland.
Walk through Dibbinsdale for bluebells, wood anemones and other flowers of ancient
woodland, and some local history. Finish with lunch at the Dibbinsdale Hotel if you like!
Meet: Bromborough Rake Station, Bromborough Rake, SJ342819.
Come by train - or park considerately in the nearby housing (no parking at station).

6. Sunday 6th May, 11am to 4pm #
NEW FERRY BUTTERFLY PARK, Open Day to start the new season,
Childrens' activities, craft and art stalls, pond dipping, guided walks to find mini-beasts.
Meet: New Ferry Butterfly Park, adjacent to Bebington Station car park, off Bebington Road,
New Ferry. SJ333851. Come by train or bus. Disabled parking only inside the Park, general
parking in Port Sunlight.

7. Tuesday 15th May, 4pm
Fort and rockpooling.
New Brighton shore, rockpools and other shore invertebrates. Fort Perch Rock and its
history. No need to book. Ideal for families

8. Wednesday 13th June, 10am
Red Rocks to West Kirby along the shore.
Plants of sand dunes and salt marsh, including the new "Green Beach". Local history of this
coast including Hilbre islands.
Meet: Stanley Road slipway, SJ204883. Come by train (arrive Hoylake, leave West Kirby) or
walk back along the beach.
Leaders: Mathilde Baker-Schommer, Hilary Ash for plants, Sue Craggs for history.

9. Saturday 28th July, 2pm. #
Grassland management traditional-style with scythes.
Watch, and if you like have a go yourself. Pond dipping and mini-beast hunts. Disabled
access. Ideal for families. No need to book.

Lowland Heathland. Thurstaston Common.
Heathers, landscape and management including grazing. No need to book.

11. Sunday 9th September, 2pm

birthday of Cheshire Wildlife Trust.

Help plant 50 wild flowers at Bidston Moss community woodland to celebrate the 50th
birthday of Cheshire Wildlife Trust.

Meet: car park in front of Materials Recycling Facility, Wallasey Bridge Road (entrance
between the entrance and exit to the Household Waste disposal site. SJ 297907). If coming
by train, bus or cycle, meet at end of signed footpath access to Bidston Moss, on Wallasey
Bridge Road next to exit from Household Waste site.

13. Thursday 20 September, start 10 am, (high tide 14.37, 9.3m)
Stones and birds.
Geology of the clay cliffs and birds of the Dee estuary. No need to book.
Meet: Wirral Country Park visitor centre, Station Road, Thurstaston, SJ239834, walking
down Station Road steps onto the beach.

14. Friday 5th October, 1pm (walk), about 2pm lighthouse tour
Leasowe lighthouse and winter birds
A birdwatch for the winter months - Leasowe Bay at high tide. Walk from Leasowe
lighthouse to the shore, return to the lighthouse for hot drinks. The fit can climb the steps to
the lamp room! No need to book for walk, which is free, but booking needed for the
lighthouse (cost £2.50) 0151 327 5923.
