On April the 27th time of the day to be confirmed.
These Cranes are being demolished.

Apparently there is one leg that will be removed
and then "Hopefully" they will fall over?

So lots of room for mistakes there then.

27th is a Sunday.

Thank you to my source wink

Yep, these beauties are coming down!!
Sunday 27th, aprox 9am im told today.
The idea is to clear the quayside and lay down sand from the nearby unused sand silos. then 1 quayside leg is to be partly cut thru ( gas axe! ) and a steel blast box ( to control and intensify the blast! ) is to be welded around the back of that leg.
On the day, explosives will be strapped to the inside of that leg ( only one on each crane! ) inside the blast box and a cage and sandbagging piled around to control the blast.
The idea is to blast a leg and make the crane fall onto the sand coated quayside ( sand to prevent damaging the quay surface ) also will be taking out two old light towers in their way!
Probs is that the cabs contain aspestos and need to be removed seperatly by hand / crane beforehand, starting tomorrow,16th.
Ther will be a strict cordoned off area of the surrounding roads, but i think you will all get a good view either on the main corporation road or opposite the docks just over the duke st bridge at the back of the cafe.
Me, im sitting IN the docks, ringside seat!!!! thumbsupAnt changes will post em asap

I too have photographed those cranes many time since I first stsrted with a camera in the late 1950s. Local landmark they are

dooes any1 know why they stopped using them and when??
Posted By: Mark Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 20th Apr 2008 8:15pm
Apparently they haven't been used for years...
They can only lift 40 tonn.

Probably maintenance and certification (Health and Safety) is the reason they stopped being used.

I believe the current price of scrap metal could be an incentive.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 20th Apr 2008 8:53pm
when were they erected? i believe it was late 40s????

Sad that they're going - I thought they could make a great focal point for the new Wirral Waters development like where there are one or two cranes left in Canary Wharf in London.

It's progress I guess.....
Posted By: Snodvan Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 23rd Apr 2008 8:57pm
I had a look around today - it will be difficult to get onto the quayside opposite so I may have to stay arond Duke St bridge - unless any of you "moles" know a way in elsewhere.

SOMEWHERE I have pics taken in the early/ mid 1960s. They may be colour slides. The problem is that I have about 20,000 unindexed colour slides. Sorting them is one of those jobs I will do when I retire - err, except that was near 10 years ago.

The topic inspires me of course so maybe I will have hunt for the old pics.

Update :

The Cranes are coming down at 8am.
Docks and Dock Road Closed from 7am.
Anyone past those points is being counted in and out.
So if you need a spek you need to get there pre 7am.

Just got a text from my source, so take the above how you
wish will update later if i get more info.
Posted By: Mark Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 26th Apr 2008 11:35am
The Head count is only for Dock Employees that are wanting
to watch from with in the Docks.

But its probable the roads to cars in the surrounding area's
will be closed off by 7am.

So a little park and ride wink
Posted By: Andy13 Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 26th Apr 2008 1:00pm
so will i get in if i get there b4 7am or wot??
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 26th Apr 2008 1:18pm
I think what Mark means is roads may be closed off around there, so before 7am, you can get through the roads by car, after 7am, the roads are closed and the only access is by foot.
Posted By: Andy13 Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 26th Apr 2008 3:05pm
oh of course wheres the best place 2 stand then i was finkin the old railway lines by custody suite
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 26th Apr 2008 3:10pm
probably not, as theres big walls all the way around there and it will probably be closed off around there too.

I think someone mentioned going by the Bridge Cafe which would probably be a good view.

Posted By: Snodvan Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 26th Apr 2008 7:36pm
This evening I took a drive down to the potential viewing areas

The first Pic shows the view from the bridge. I then looked for somewhere on the opposite side of the dock. POTENTIALLY there is a good view if the gate is open Sunday morning. The area looks deserted so I think it will be. Come from Penny Bridge end of the Wallasey dock road until you see blue railings and an open gate on your right and opposite a "training centre" building on your left that is up for sale. Park up and go through the blue gates and alongside the (shuttered) building onto the dockside. At that point you can only just see the cranes from the edge of the dock. The second pic was taken from that point (with about 300mm tele lens). However if you walk along the back of that building towards Duke St bridge then you get a much better view.

This latter viewpoint is possibly better for anyone getting up late and who cannopt get access to the Duke St area (which I guess will be pretty crowded anyway despite the early hour).

Was in the docks before 7, having a mooch about with the film crew and demo`s. That ship on the quay was meant to be out, so had to evacuate the crew and lock them in `F` shed, top of the docks!!
Well worth getting out of bed for in the rain on a Sunday morning!!

There's a model shop on oxton road in Birkenhead which may be able to help you repair it smile

Looks similar to the scale model of woodside in the Wirral Museum.

Should be a good model restoration project - let us know how you get on with it wink

As I mentioned, you might want to go to Kit Stop on Oxton Road - they may be able to put you in touch with someone who could do a decent job of repairing it or if not, they should be able to supply you with materials and paint at least.
Posted By: Andy13 Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 27th Apr 2008 6:14pm

Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 27th Apr 2008 6:19pm
I have no idea of the cost, sorry frown

is it a working model? does the cab turn and the arms move?
Posted By: fordsteve Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 27th Apr 2008 6:21pm
you best off taken it to the model shop on oxton raod they will tell you mate they good in there thumbsup
Posted By: Andy13 Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 27th Apr 2008 6:26pm
everything moves and works (well did) them pics i put on 1 is rite out like i left the 1 in the docks and the other tucked in close and it turns round aswel well worth £50 like
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 27th Apr 2008 6:30pm
even better that its a working model then.

Deffo worth £50.

£100 to me seems a fair price for someone to do a decent job of repairing it to get it fully working.

Great video wheels and that model just kicks arse.. When i was a kid i was naughty and used to climb the cranes got caught once and told off but then i started asking loads of questions and they realised i was intrested and told me i could of been hurt cause they where dangerous.. I remember trying to get into the Cab area but the doors where allways locked but what i do remember is finding the buttons on the side where they blew the legs off to move them up and down the quayside and low and be hold got tarted off the dock side cause i didnt know what i was doing well i saw a button and pressed it and what happened a beep then it moved LOL i shit but thats my memory of them.. Anyways got a question to ask what was the name of the crane make as i want to see if theres any others like them and hunt around the net to see if i can compare em and see if there still standing if not they might of been the last.. happy

Posted By: Andy13 Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 27th Apr 2008 11:24pm
The maker is Babcock & Wilcox Cranes

I've been searching the internet for last 3 yrs for others alike an never found nefink i fink they were 1 odf a kind

sayin ya move them wen we used 2 go bout 4 yrs ago i could always get in the cab we used 2 get eachother on the ropes and swing it over the docks of a night when ya used to move the main arm in and out it was ded noisy and used 2 shake loads quite scary wen i fink bout it now we at least i can say i was the last person 2 move them both and they have stayed in the same position ever since lol

The girl filming on behalf of Dicovery said that they had sacrificial cameras around the site, radio link jobs. We must look for when the film comes on UK channels.

Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 28th Apr 2008 6:11pm
They were 150ft tall, each weighed 320 tonnes and were erected in 1964. They were mainly used for discharging dry bulk cargoes from ships.

Port operator the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company – part of Peel Ports Group – said removing the quayside cranes will allow for better use of the area.
Posted By: Anonymous Re: Demolish Date - Birkenhead Cranes - 28th Apr 2008 6:38pm
RIP the Class 502 stock - did the L'pool to Southport & Ormskirk lines. Similar design to the Wirral 503 sets. Best units ever!

Deep, springy comfortable seats, varnished wood trim, leather straps to hang onto at rush hour - pure quality. Built like brick outhouses.

Went like the clappers on open track. 1000's of amps under your left hand. Bliss !!!

just had word with old man and he says that pic will be mid to late seventies, where those sidings are now has those big warehouses on, he also recognised them as southport ones because of some vents or summit

Hi Guys,

went away over the weekend come back yesterday and then on the way to work this morning noticed there are no cranes?

Where did they go? anyone got a vid?
Posted By: BMW Joe Re: Where's the cranes gone? - 6th May 2008 5:42pm
Where have you been for the past 2 weeks? lol

Theres plenty of pictures and videos in this topic
Posted By: keefy Re: Where's the cranes gone? - 6th May 2008 7:17pm
They didn't even come down this weekend it was the one before. Really gutted about not seeing this, would have loved to see these go. Was only sat in a yard over the road a few weeks back admiring them. Thinking, now camel lairds cranes are gone these are the biggest landmark we have. And now they are gone to.

Just been reading that it was peel holdings who got rid of them. I thought the planning application had been refused. I'm sure it was peel holdings who brought down lairds cranes when Wirral borough council had said wait to see if they could get any ship building work in. Theres a bit of a re occurring thing happening with peel holdings, cranes and get rid for no reason...

Just my ten pence worth anyway. Oh and it was great to see it in the local papers?

It wasn't planning that was refused recently, the eco-town next to Peel's Wirral Waters didn't get added to the governments shortlist for special eco-town grants. Stuff is happening with Wirral Waters, the Hydraulic Tower should hopefully get permisison soon (tomorrow I think) and lots of work is going on now to clear sites around the docks which will be put to use on short-term leases to bring some cash in whilst planning is sought (you can see this at the old Bidston Dock, the site between Four bridges and the grain warehouse and on the corner by Duke Street).

The scrap metal is either in Nortons or EMR in Liverpool, whoever is giving the best prices on steel at the time!
The cranes have almost gone now, was working on Technical Demolitions machines the other day, only got the bulky scrap to cut down to managable sizes now!

I used to get that living in Leicester - I think I ended up losing the accent over time to accommodate those who couldn't understand me raftl

When I first started uni down there I lived in halls with a girl from Derry, NI. She was impossible to understand - we spent the first 2 weeks speaking pidgin English to make sense of each other. And working with people from India or Pakistan with very thick accents - blimey, the things you can mishear! Not to mention Malaysian students - even madder to understand!! Especially funny as they have a way of saying 'la' at the end of sentences.
