I bought a brand new gold engagement ring (since found out it was slightly to big) put it in a jewellers to be resized and I got it back and it was silver in colour, when asked what happened they were adamant that the ring was in fact white gold and that it has just been repolished that's why it looks the way it does (shiny silver), I am 100% certain the ring is or at least was gold and is now looking very cheap, I just wanted to no if anybody knows what may have happened to it, I hear it maybe rhodium plated but I didn't ask for it to be plated, would like to know where do I stand as to getting it put back gold if possible whatever has happened to it?
Many thanks.
Ps not sure if this is the right thread.

That sounds very strange. Did you take a picture of it before you handed it over for resizing? Looking silvery is not necessarily cheap, by the way - could be white gold, could even look like platinum.

How about going to another jeweller and ask if it's white gold and how much it would retail for.

Without mentioning names you could also explain what has happened , if the answers you get do not correspond with the facts. They should be able to tell you. Then at least you will have some knowledge, if you wish to go back to the original jeweller.
If the ring was brand new and sold as yellow gold when it is white gold, it must come under the 'Misrepresentation in the sale of goods' act. I hope you have your receipt.
White gold only goes yellow with age according to this;

Hallmarks should tell

Thanks for the replies, I have no pictures of the ring before it went in, where I bought it is a different jeweller to where I had it resized, the ring was for certain yellow gold I only wanted it taken down 2 sizes and I got it back silver in colour maybe I should take an opinion of another Jewellers an talk them through what's happened, hallmarks definitely point to ring being gold, very dissappointed with the service iv received overall I got no where when I pointed out the ring was gold when it came in for repair, I was felt like I was fobbed off with the old "oh it's white gold" when I no it isn't or wasn't.

Trading standards might be interested. Worth a try I'd say.

Take it back to the shop you originally bought it from and ask their opinion on whether it is the same ring they sold you. All a bit odd but I can't see a reputable jeweler making a change to the ring other than what you instructed them.

Doesn't each ring sold have it's own code to be recorded by the jeweller ? I could be wrong but Exoriaor is probably right. Give Trading Standards a call and see what advice they can give you, prior to jumping in with both feet.

Iv spoken to the jeweller who done the resizing and they are still adamant that it is white gold but they said if I'm not happy that it's been "polished" then they can rebuffer it to bring out the yellow, again I'm a bit sceptical but lets see what happens all I want is the ring back in the same condition it was when I put it in, again many thanks for the replies.

Some information on the subject from an

Even when a diamond ring is in yellow gold, the setting is usually white gold or platinum (platinum is better because the claws will be stronger) in order not to colour the diamond.
