how many 27 year old cars do you see on the road??
looking after "old" cars might not be of much interest to you, but no need to take the piss.
im sure it will get a lot more looks than a modern looking car, even if it is to laugh at it smile i think its retro cool

Brightspark, if you ever want to sell the car, I'd 100% buy it off you. When you want to get rid, keep that in mind as I've been looking for one for ages.
I missed out on a standard GTE last year for 500 quid and I'm still gutted. frown I really, really want one.

haha your 2nd on the list, i picked my GTE up locally for 450, dont expect much steel there to weld to but its all there and can build from it

i love them, allways wanted one since i was like 15 im 19 now and have 2, ive never seen another one only the ones ive got

best hot hatch of its day, golf gti had nothing on it. keep looking, usually get about 1 every week on ebay

tried me dads cav wheels on the car today, fox evo 3s and i think they look raaaaaaather good, so there staying

was a bit unsure with putting silly wheels on it, might change me mind and go back to 14s smile

bodywork looks a bit shabby, i was gently flatting it down with some fine wet and dry then cutting it back up, but got tired halfway through so never finished

i agree 17s are to big for a small car, 16s are biggest you should go, its already been lowered once lol and the tyres are 205s smile

Thats a nice motor mate, don't see many of these knockin round and its in fairly good nick. I love old school cars, gotta lot more character then all the new stuff. Looked at gettin a chevette a while back an throwin a red top engine in it, old school and drifty!!!
Posted By: placidmaster Re: BrightSparks: 1981 Astra MK1 GL 1300S - 12th Mar 2008 7:48am
get a shoveit and throw in either the sierrs 2 litre dohc engine or the old 3.5 rover v8 in it, they both fit, and also the astra is looking cool
Posted By: StuyMac Re: BrightSparks: 1981 Astra MK1 GL 1300S - 12th Mar 2008 8:36am
Love the Mk1 Astras, got so much more character than the new ones.

Any plans for a red top conversion, or even a slightly simpler 2.0 8V transplant from a Cav SRi?

Still 130bhp from the 8V, but Im pretty sure the Mk1 aint that heavy smile

do they, any examples ?
Posted By: StuyMac Re: BrightSparks: 1981 Astra MK1 GL 1300S - 12th Mar 2008 8:52am
...anything will fit if you have enough ££££ wink

The HSR was the Rally daddy, but very unreliable.

The Rover V8 only put out 150bhp, but made a nice sound, and the 8V Sierra DOHC motor wouldnt pull you out of bed - tbh if you where going to fit a new motor to a Chevette, go redtop or Cosworth DOHC and stick them on TBs smile

so they wouldn't just drop sraight in then, or would they - but with new engine mounts, loom, engine managment, drive shafts etc etc
Posted By: StuyMac Re: BrightSparks: 1981 Astra MK1 GL 1300S - 12th Mar 2008 9:16am
no

It would need a custom front subframe, the transmission tunnel may need modding to fit a gearbox to suit the engine, then you need a diff to suit, which may include a new rear axle.

The original car was on carbs, so it would need an ECU and loom, unless you stuck with a carb setup...

Im pretty sure you would need to seam weld the shell also as a std Chevette was never designed to take much power - with the HSR being the exeption but that was seam welded from the factory for rallying.
Posted By: BrightSpark Re: BrightSparks: 1981 Astra MK1 GL 1300S - 13th Mar 2008 10:43pm
well i will have a spare 130bhp 8v knocking about when the redtop gets used so was going to put that in the 1300s. not sure yet

if u want RWD fun, get a manta :):)

and fit a c30se out of a senny 24v or a carlton gsi 24v
204bhp straight six beast, inderstuctable engines

........oh and fit a blower :D:D

Yes, it was done out, and then he realised the bulk head needed replacing, so I think he's replacing it. He put up a red GTE mk1 for sale last year for 900 quid, but it got sold.

Rey is doing well, I still own the car. Only upgrades recently is a 16v rear beam with a 22mm rear arb, 256mm front brake upgrade, polybush exhaust mount as the rubber one fell off, 1200s ariel, new set of wheels powdercoated white with T1R tyres, replacement rear turret, bit of welding in engine bay around front turrets, polished bonnet lifters.

Nice one mate, looking great!

Keep up the good work, you've looked after it well.

Good to see more modders on here and you've come back after a while gone.

What motors in your Saab?

Thanks Wal, It's been off the road for about 9-10 months so not likely to see it on the road soon as it needs a fair bit doing to it.
