Not sure weather to go. I was going to go on my own yesterday but the weather looked like it was going to turn out rubbish. I think I would prefer to go over and explore/take photos with out some ranger deciding where and when to take me. I know the place very well anyway.

Kev - we're only going on Ranger's Day because of the tides. When I went before they didn't interfere, admittedly I don't get into the places that you guys do but there's always staff over there that will stop you doing anything you shouldn't!
Posted By: RUDEBOX Re: HILBRE ISLAND - 28th Mar 2010 8:57pm
I found the ranger v. Informative on my last 'led' visit. Maybe do the 'led' thing, gather info+ perhaps do anuva without the autocrat-next time. wink
Posted By: KevinFinity Re: HILBRE ISLAND - 28th Mar 2010 9:00pm
I have been over many a time and never seen anyone of authority not that I would get up to no good anyway. I just wander over, have an explore and go home. The tide times are put on the Public information board at the windsurf place every week. I am familiar with the tide pattens anyway. I have had to outrun the tide there a couple of times before. laugh

ill come along simply because its another day out with [Team|Wiki] and they are always fantastic, but I do agree with Kev, it is much better on a non-open day, because you tend to get crowds of people on the island... however, if the telegraph station is open there is more to see and more information to gather.

The last time I was over there was in November 2007 when me and Scott went over to get cut-off by the tide and have a laugh for 6 hours, it was quality, took some fantastic shots and had some hilarious (dangerous) moments lol.

Should be a great day out and ill be taking a packed lunch and a flask of tea with me, id recommend everyone do the same, if the weather is nice.
Posted By: KevinFinity Re: HILBRE ISLAND - 29th Mar 2010 6:45pm
I was planning to go over there in the next few weeks to get a load of photos to replace the ones I lost of the place when my old hard drive died. Thats why I am fussy about going where I want on the island. Also it was going to be pretty spur of the moment because I want the weather to be good for the photos. I also don't think in this day and age of health and safety that Ranger Smith will allow us to brave the rather treacherous rocks to get to the cave at the back.

Talking of dangerous rocks, my grandmother's father was a Ranger on there, must have been about just before the turn of the 19th century and she slipped on the rocks as a kid and damaged her back. They tried to straighten it with a steel plate with a weight on it, it didn't work and she ended up with a badly disfigured back. Just thought I'd mention it. The surname was Jackson I think, if anybody asks or gets to see any records.

Seems like a lot a hassle for a lump of sandstone you can walk to whenever you want, tides permitting. I will just go on my own if there is 1 too many before the walk.

What's to stop anyone following the ranger, listen to what he's saying, go on his tour, then wander off and do your own thing
making sure you get back to land in time
I'd like a couple of pics of middle isle just to see what we camped on one night years ago
Posted By: RUDEBOX Re: HILBRE ISLAND - 2nd Apr 2010 3:03pm
i didnt think we were following the ranger? thought it would just be a case of himing being around to ask questions, if required. He'll probably have to stay near the telegraph station and his telescope.
Posted By: Capt_America Re: HILBRE ISLAND - 2nd Apr 2010 3:23pm
The ranger is called Dave and I have met him a few times (my mate has just retired as the manager of the marine lake) and he was always down there. He is a good guy and really helpful. If you get the chance for him to take you round do it, it will be worth it.
Posted By: KevinFinity Re: HILBRE ISLAND - 4th Apr 2010 2:03pm
How about I go over ahead of the rest and meet you all there. That way we don't have to worry about silly rules regarding permits. Knowing what Wikki walks are usually like we will be spread out all over the place and not in one group when we get over there anyway. There will be other people milling about there too.

Also I suggest people wear walking boots or wellies that is if you are willing to walk that far in them. Once the tide go's out there is usually 2 to 3 small channels of standing water that you have to go through. They are not deep but you might get your feet wet wearing trainers. In the summer its usually not a problem because the sun drys the beach quickly.

Thanks RudeBox, As you will see by my profile I like photography. Look forward to meeting you all!
Posted By: KevinFinity Re: HILBRE ISLAND - 4th Apr 2010 5:06pm
Don't worry about the tides Nigel. The tide times are posted on the information board at the windsurfing place. You can tell when it comes in because it fills up a large pool area in front of Hilbre for a while before it starts advancing across the beach. Even when it does you can out walk it as long as you don't dawdle and thats if the beach patrol have not already herded you away on their quad bikes.

Posted By: KevinFinity Re: HILBRE ISLAND - 4th Apr 2010 5:34pm
There is a pay and display opposite the Toilets/windsurfing place or you could risk leaving it in Morrisons but I would just park on the prom or a side street for free. The Marine lake car park is supposed to be permit holders only during the day.

You can't do it with bare feet because of the weavil fish that can give you a nasty sting and lay jusy under the suface.

Kevin as Tigeredwards is from China, perhaps the grasp of English is somewhat lacking, though of course might also have been drinking snake wine or similar?

Be interesting to see further posts from Tiger

I doubt very much they are really from china.

Welcome to the internet mother. Its full of random people living through their online personas pretending to be anyone they want to be and doing random things like bumping up threads that died almost a year ago.

Thanks. Think the real rather than virtual world suits me best.I forgot some spend alot of their time adopting online personas and developing avatars. No problem so long as they don't get too hooked.
