I've often said the if you force targets on people you end up with liars and cheats, this was my suspicion in the Lucy Letby "baby murderer" case. Here was a hospital department failing badly on targets.
Lucy was convicted without any hard evidence, primarily on statistics and opinion, here are some points to consider ....
A number of senior statisticians have stated that the way the statistics were used and interpreted was completely unsafe.
Her own boss admitted that she had made misleading statements.
The medical expert has changed his mind about three of the cases and now believes they were not murder.
The systems used to show when she was on the ward have been blown apart as totally unreliable data.
A lot of accusations happened retrospectively after considerable periods of time, it took over a year for this supposed information of murder to filter up the management chain.
The department's consultants will be very aware that some of the deaths could end their careers.
There was a huge trial by media with a heavy bias towards her being guilty.
To me it smells of a scapegoat scenario for a failing department or plain bad luck. She might be guilty, she might not, but she is innocent until proven guilty and there is no credible evidence that she is guilty. There undoubtedly has been some unsafe convictions against her.

Three managers from the Countess of Chester Hospital have now been arrested for suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. Presumably attempts to hide the department's failings are among the reasons this has come about. Investigations into this matter are ongoing.
It should be noted that the police investigations into the deaths of the babies is still ongoing as a separate issue.
