I went to the Service at Woodside this week.
Members of Highland Light Regiment came down from Glasgow, because soldiers from the Regiment were on board when it sank off the coast of South Africa. The vessel was built in Birkenhead.
The Memorial was designed by a local student. I thought it was most unusual, as it's mirrors reflect the person looking at the Memorial. Worth popping to see it next time you are at Woodside. It it to the left of the Ferry Building entrance. The plaque shows the history of the Vessel and that 'Women and children first' become known as the 'Birkenhead Drill'.The women and children having been put in the three servicable lifeboats, the soldiers and sailors stood to attention on board deck, as the ship sank in shark infested waters 162 years ago
