Filming will take place this summer, in and around the Yorkshire town of Holmfirth, for transmission in 2010.

The series, which is a whimsical comedy about people in the autumn of their years, is written by Roy Clarke and stars Peter Sallis as Norman Clegg alongside several other eminent cast members including Russ Abbot (Hobbo), Frank Thornton (Truly), Brian Murphy (Alvin), June Whitfield (Nelly) and Burt Kwouk (Entwistle).

Mark Freeland, Head of Comedy at the BBC, said: "I am pleased that Roy Clarke's much loved and unique comedy is once more returning to BBC One."

Writer Roy Clarke said: "It's like going home again."

The series is written by Roy Clarke and produced and directed by Alan J W Bell.

Last Of The Summer Wine has clocked up more than 30 series. The series debuted on the BBC in 1973.

Yerrrrr was gutted when the BBC ... announced they were cancelling it as part of cutbacks (yet Jonathan Ross still gets over £6million a year).

They should keep it going as long as Peter Sallis is alive and kicking, and he has publically stated, he never want's to stop doing it, it should never just be thrown out cos the BBC want to cut production budgets just so they can continue to pay worthless dicks like Joanathan Ross millions of pounds. We need more good and enjoyable, family friendly BRITISH comedy onscreen, not less, and LOTSW is one of dying breed of programmes that falls into that category.

Long live LOTSW!! cool

It will never be as good as it was when the above was in it.

Of course not, the two Brian Wilde era's were by far the peak, but it's still great, clean, family comedy, and portray's old people in a positive light for a change.

LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE IS MAGNIFICENT , BUT IT WILL NOT BE SEEN ON TV HERE IN THAILAND . I BOUGHT EVERY VIDEO TAPE ISSUED AND , WHEN DVD REPLACED VIDEO , I BOUGHT EVERY DVD . BUT WHY HASN'T THE BBC ISSUED FAR MORE OF THIS SUPERB SERIES ON DVD ? . SURELY THERE MUST BE AN ANXIOUSLY AWAITING MARKET .
WHILST I AM STRICT IN MY AVOIDANCE OF ANY PIRATED RECORDINGS , THE BBC , AFTER HAVING CREATED SUCH A VIEWER DEPENDENCY ON L.O.T.S.W. , HAVE BOTH A MORAL AND COMMERCIAL DUTY TO SEE THAT SUCH A DEPENDENCY IS FED .

Unfortunately... I cant see there being much of a current demand for it.

Other BBC programmes also seem to be suffering with this problem, such as "Shooting Stars". Theres still no plans for that to be released on DVd, despite there being a HUGE demand for it frown

Just the way the BBC work I suppose.

FFS!! If this is not a waste of our TV licence then I don't know what is!!! I hope they aren't going to resurrect the cast (this could tie in with the zombie thread omg )
Next they'll be resurrecting Only Fools and Horses! Ah crap, I spoke too soon... OFAH Prequel

This time, I firmly believe, it really will be, the last of the summer wine...

Over the years it has featured a host of famous faces including Eric Sykes, Dame Thora Hird and Bill Owen as Compo. Jay Hunt, controller of BBC One, said the final series to be shown this summer will be a "fitting farewell" to the well-loved characters.

It will feature Peter Sallis as Norman Clegg alongside several other cast members including Russ Abbot as Hobbo and Brian Murphy, who plays Alvin.

Every single episode of the sitcom has been written by Roy Clarke and produced and directed by Alan J W Bell. There had been speculation for many years that the show would be retired but it was continually commissioned.

"The BBC feels enormously privileged to have played host to its many charms for such a long time and we very much respect the affection in which it is held. It is very tough to have to call time on such a cherished institution but we are very sincere in our gratitude for, and admiration of Last Of The Summer Wine. It is the undisputed champion of long-running comedy series."

BBC One will celebrate the end of the long-running series with special editions of Countryfile and Songs Of Praise. Both will come from Holmfirth, the village in Yorkshire where the series has been filmed since it began in 1973.

Very sad, but at least they are doing things properly this time, and planning on giving it a proper send-off, instead of just cutting it randomly like they have proposed in previous years.

I look forward to watching the final series.
