Hi,
does anyone know what year the houses in Hind St were built and when they were pulled down? were they 2up 2down houses?
i have a photo of the street, are there anymore around?
i am interested because my Great Uncle who was killed in ww1 married a girl from there and i just want to picture it as it was then.
thanks,
Chris.

As far as I can tell Hind Street was laid out in early 1867, so presumably the first houses were built not long after that. They were certainly in existence by 1873 when the first large scale OS map was surveyed.

There was a Methodist church in Hind Street. This church was founded in 1873. It closed in 1966. Don't know if this bit of information is any help?

This is a picture of Hind Street taken in 1904 when the Grange Vale sewer was being laid. The Wesleyan Chapel is on the left and was opened in 1873.

The camera is looking down towards the junction with Blackpool Street and the entrance to the gasworks. I don't know what the building on the right is, but in latter years, the gas board offices were located along there.

As far as I remember, the houses were demolished around 1967-1968, along with much of the surrounding area, to make way for the new tunnel flyovers.

The picture is from Ian Boumphrey's book Birkenhead, A Pictorial History.

The first aerial photo below was taken in September 1967 during the construction of the Tunnel Approach flyovers and shows the houses and Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. By the time of the second photo, taken during an aerial survey in the early 70s, the houses had gone, though the Chapel was still standing.

Ground level shot of the top of Hind St, again it's when the flyovers were being constructed. Probably 1968 for this one.

If you really are talking about No.21 Hind Street perhaps I should point out that in Yoller's photo No.21 is the house on the left with the bicycles propped up against the front. If your ancestors were still living there in 1904, presumably that is them standing outside their front door!

The following cutting from the Liverpool Mercury of 20th October 1874 relates to the sale of the two blocks of houses at the top of Hind Street (for some reason there never appears to have been a No.11 in the street - possibly they thought at some point someone would squeeze another house into the gap between Nos.9 and 13).

Chris I am afraid I do not have very good news regarding Sarah. they had two children

Sarah Victory she was born in Jan to March of 1902 and died in the same qtr.

Son Thomas born 27 May 1903 and he also died age 6 months

Then Sarah died in June 1904 I do not have death cert for any of the above.

At the time of the marriage in 1901 my grandfather was living at 31 Hind St, but it must have only been for a short while because he is not on 1901 census

My grandfather remarried and i am from that marriage.
I have not researched The Jones Family as I am not a blood relative and none of the children survived.

hope this helps
Alan
