Father and girl, three, drown after falling 50ft from waterfall

A man and a three-year-old girl, believed to be his daughter, drowned yesterday after falling 50ft down a Welsh waterfall.
Emergency services were called after the 33-year-old man and the child were reported missing from a campsite near the Nantcol Waterfalls in Snowdonia National Park.

A boy of 11, thought to be related to them, was found unharmed but the two bodies were pulled from the water at 6pm.
A spokesman for the Coastguard told how the initial call said two children had fallen into the water. He said: ‘It looks like the man may have jumped in trying to save his children.’

Part of the chain of waterfalls around Nantcol in Snowdonia National Park, where a man and a three-year-old girl died yesterday
Fire service search teams were joined by the police helicopter and ambulance crews and assisted by two trained divers, who happened to be in the area at the time.

A fire service spokeswoman said: 'At 16.09 police received a call reporting that a man and a child had gone into the waterfall at Llanbedr and fallen 50-foot into a pool below.
'The North Wales Police helicopter, Fire and Rescue Service and Ambulance Service commenced a search of the area with the help of two trained divers who were in the area at the time.
'At 17.56 two bodies were recovered from the river. A 33-year-old man and a three-year-old girl, are believed to have been staying at a local campsite.
'A full investigation into the incident will be carried out tomorrow by the police and fire service.'
Mr Edwards said: 'This tragic incident highlights the dangers of swimming in unknown waters and venturing in the locality of any unknown waters.
'We would ask everybody to take extra care when near water.'
Elsewhere in the region, several search and rescue missions were mounted for the participants of a race up Mount Snowdon.

The police, along with RAF Valley and the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team were involved in the rescue of four casualties, one of which later died.
No details were released about the victim, however the police said the death was not related to any accident and was not considered to be suspicious.
Inspector Ian Maxwell said: 'We urge members of the public who walk on mountains to take extra care and make sure they are properly equipped.
'They should ensure that somebody knows where they are planning to walk and that they have the experience and capability to deal with the locations they have chosen.'
Last month six people were flown to hospital by helicopter after getting into difficulties on Snowdon during a race which took place in heavy wind and rain.
Prince William, currently training to be an RAF Search and Rescue pilot, is expected to be based at RAF Valley, on Anglesey, next year once he is qualified to fly the Sea King helicopter.
