Six people have been killed in a head-on crash on a rural road, police have said.

Two police officers on a routine patrol came across the crash on the A614 Old Rufford Road near Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire, shortly after 11pm on Friday.

A Nottinghamshire Police spokesman said the crash involved a Peugeot 206 travelling southbound along the carriageway and a Ford Fiesta heading in the opposite direction.

Four young people were in the Peugeot and two "mature" people were in the Fiesta. Both cars burst into flames after the impact.

Superintendent Bruce Cameron, who described the crash as a "dreadful accident", said: "The fire damage was very very substantial and all six people were sadly pronounced dead at the scene."

The incident had been "distressing" for emergency service personnel, he added.

Police and fire crews remained at the scene and the road was expected to be closed until later.

Police believe they know the identities of the victims but will not be releasing that information until after post-mortem examinations have been completed, a spokesman said
