I hope nobody thinks this subject should not be posted on Wiki, but I feel it is of the greatest importance and needs to be brought to the attention of everyone.

The below article is on the BBC news site this morning and the figures are quite staggering.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-26758565

What I do not understand is, how can anyone in such a vulnerable position of threats call for help and who to? The police don't involve themselves unless the crime has happened anyway. There would appear to be no current contact number available for anyone who was in fear for themselves or children. I know the council have a number for them contacting an official body, but that could be more damaging. e.g. A person is frightened for their own safety. The perpetrator goes to the shops, the victim phones a helpline, the perpetrator comes home, the helpline return the call to the victim, the victim gets a battering because they have been found out.
Is that a possible scenario? Quite often the perpetrator have managed to cut off all contact between the victim and friends and family. Why is there not a manned helpline 24/7 that can connect these poor people almost immediately, so that in the brief window of opportunity, they can at least manage to open a door for themselves and anyone else it affects.
Sorry, but this type of crime physical and mental abuse caused by bullies, is something I feel VERY strongly about.

I heard the piece about this on R4 this morning. Got agree with you Granny on your concerns about the whole sketch. It seems to be a very low priority as far the the police are concerned. It seems they run a mile from DV cases (Domestic violence).

One woman had an interviewing policeman "chance his hand" shall we say, whilst other members of the family were out of the room ! FFS! I'm sure/I hope that it's an extreme case, but it seems to highlight the fact that DV is best walked away from.

Just my 2d worth.

Getting help in an abusive situation is never going to be easy or simple. The Police can, of course, step in but need an evidenced case to take to Court.

Often the abused person goes back to the situation, perhaps thinking things will be better.

If there are children, matters become even more complicated.

Personally, if it was a bloke doing the abusing, he should have his knackers nicked and a spell of hard labour - preferably in Russia for life.

If a woman is the abuser then scrubbing floors in Russia for life would be adequate.
