Motorway closed after fatal crash

One of the Transit vans fell onto the carriageway
A 12-mile stretch of the M6 in Cumbria has been closed after a man died when a vehicle transporter crashed on Monday.
Police said the lorry carrying Transit vans crashed through the central reservation, near junction 42 at Carlisle South, at 0800 BST.

The impact caused one of the vans to spill on to the road. A second man was treated for minor injuries in hospital.

The closure is expected in both directions between junction 41 at Wigton and junction 42 until 1400 BST.

Large tailbacks have been reported in the area and motorists are being advised to avoid the motorway around Carlisle.

Diversions are in place on the A6, but heavy congestion is also being reported on that road.

Insp Terry Bathgate, of Cumbria Police, said: "There is significant technical difficulties in recovering a vehicle of this size.

"There are experts at the scene recovering scientific evidence and we have to spend time to find the root cause of this accident."
