A FIRE spread rapidly across the marsh in the Wirral peninsula village of Parkgate on Sunday afternoon.

The fire service brought the flames under control at about 5.10pm after being alerted to the blaze, thought to have been started deliberately, by local residents.

Vandals are thought to have started the fire in the Moorfields area and the fire spread as far as Mostyn House.

The flames caused a swathe of damage across the marshland.

It is the latest in a spate of grass fires blamed by firefighters on the Easter school holidays.

Fire crews remained on scene during the evening to extinguish small pockets of fire.
