Man jailed after smoke bomb attack on Wirral pub A Prenton man who issued threats via a mobile phone and also smoke-bombed a Heswall pub was jailed by Wirral Magistrates.They told Carl Arthur Simmons, 26, of Francis Avenue, Prenton, it was a very serious matter with a potential to cause serious injury.
Simmons was given a total of 18 weeks in custody. He pleaded guilty to using threatening words and behaviour with intent to cause Andrew Hodson harassment, alarm or distress and also causing damage by fire at the Dee View pub in Dee View Road, Heswall.
Prosecutor Alan Currums told how Simmons was seen by a witness to throw a smoke grenade at the pub before running off.
It hit a window. Andrew Hodson who worked at the pub later received a threatening text message from the accused.
Simmons when questioned by police he commented: “I was going to blow up the pub. I didn't mean it”. He admitted throwing the smoke bomb.
He added Hodson had been in a relationship with his former girl friend and the offence was born out of a desire to frighten him.
Paul Davidson, defending, said a probation report recommended custody and it was a matter as to how long Simmons would have to serve.
He said Simmons deserved credit for a full and frank admission and it was not the worst of damage offences. He said Simmons had shown remourse but not towards Hodson.
