Is John Barnes taking over at Tranmere Rovers with Jason McAteer?

JOHN Barnes, the former Liverpool and England star, is rumoured to be lined up as the new manager of Tranmere Rovers.

He'll have fellow former LFC player and Tranmere captain Jason McAteer as his number two, it is claimed.

A report in a Sunday newspaper today claims that Barnes, currently managing Jamaica, has been in talks with Prenton Park chairman Peter Johnson about replacing Ronnie Moore, who was sensationally axed last week.

Barnes, 45, who has a home in Wirral, had a stint as Celtic boss in 1999.

Another ex-Liverpool player, Paul Ince, who also lives in Wirral, has also been strongly linked with the job.

His arrival could see Tranmere legend Ray Mathias return to the club as his assistant.

The pair worked together at both MK Dons and Blackburn Rovers.

The bookies have Barnes being installed as manager at 4/7, while Ince is 14/1.
