CLAIMS that “new” evidence threw doubts on the conviction of Wirral killer Eddie Gilfoyle have been dismissed after a review by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Gilfoyle was jailed 17 years ago for the murder of his pregnant wife Paula.

She was found hanged in the garage next to the couple’s home in Upton, Wirral, in June 1992.

A national newspaper claimed last week that new evidence had come to light, specifically that the doctor who declared Mrs Gilfoyle dead told police she had died up to six hours earlier, when her husband was at work.

This resulted in Merseyside police asking the CPS to carry out a review.
