WIRRAL Council apologised after over-enthusiastic contractors painted double yellow lines down the length of a country road, causing havoc for rugby-mad youngsters.
Thornton Common Road connects the villages of Raby Mere and Thornton Hough, and is surrounded by fields.
After resurfacing work in September, contractors returned last week to apply the finishing touches to the job.
Unfortunately, they decided both sides of the entire length of the lane was in need of double yellow lines.
And in their zeal, they even went so far as to paint them over a junction.
This week, Wirral Council described the new restrictions as a “mistake” and an “error”.
But that didn’t stop Wirral Rugby Club vice-president David Van Der Zwan scratching his head when he, his 16-year-old son and around 250 others turned up for last weekend’s action.
The club’s base is on Thornton Common Road.
David, 51, told the News: “We do have a small car park but that doesn’t compensate for the amount of cars there.
“What the council have done is just put double yellow lines, on both sides of the road, all the way down from one end to another.
“There’s no other road in a rural area which has got double yellow lines all the way down it.”
He said the new restrictions made it “dangerous for the kids”, and an inconvenience for parents who were forced to drive round looking for somewhere ‘legal’ to park.
Council chiefs admit a mistake was made. A spokesperson for Wirral Council said: “We have spoken to our contractor and a mistake has been made. The yellow lines were removed this weekend.
“We would like to apologise for the error, and for any inconvenience caused.
“Thank you for bringing it to our attention.”
Which left David pleased, but still scratching his head. He added: “What a total waste of resources.”
