Loaded handgun, bones, clothes and wig found on wasteland in Wirral
A MUM today told of her shock as her eight-year-old daughter ran home saying she had found a loaded gun.
A police search of a small patch of wasteland in New Ferry, Wirral, on Monday night recovered a loaded handgun dumped in a Kwiksave bag.
Jenni Rowlands, who lives nearby, told the ECHO: “My little girl ran in and said she’s seen a gun.
“I saw it – there was a bullet still in it.
“The police shut it all down on Monday night.
“They were here with cars and vans.
“The bag that it was in had ‘Kwiksave 40 anniversary’ written on it.”On the strength of that detail residents now believe that the gun could have lain undiscovered since 2004 when the supermarket celebrated the milestone, before closing in 2007.
The Friday before, a heap of clothes, a handbag, wig and bones were found close by.
Forensics experts were called in to analyse the bones.
“The police doctor took a look at the bones and said they could be goats bones,” Mrs Rowlands said.
The small patch of land was overgrown and untended until neighbours recently began a clean up campaign, unearthing the worrying discoveries.
“It was a piece of no man’s land, no-one really knew whose it was.
“I’ve told the lady down the road, ‘you’ve got to stop digging – you don’t know what you’ll find’.”
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said that the firearms find was not being linked to the other items found during the clean up, and confirmed that the bones were not human remains.
She added: “On Monday at 7pm in Woodland Road a member of the public was clearing the area, they seem to have found a firearm in poor condition.
“They found a number of unrelated items.”
The handgun is now being forensically examined by experts hoping to glean DNA or finger print clues from the weapon.
It has not yet been linked to any other crime and no arrests have been made.
