Two injured during armed raid at Wirral pub

STAFF at a Wirral pub were subjected to a terrifying ordeal during an aggravated burglary on Sunday night.

A 48-year-old bar supervisor and his partner, a 52-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries during the incident at the Cottage Loaf pub in Telegraph Road, Thurstaston.

Police were called, shortly after 11.45pm, by a woman who reported that two men had forced their way into the premises as staff were closing up.

The men, both wearing dark clothing and with balaclavas covering their faces, were armed with kitchen knives and what has been described as a baseball bat.

Once inside the men threatened the bar supervisor and his partner and attempted, unsuccessfully, to open the safe.

The man suffered a cut mouth and the woman suffered grazes to her legs. Both were left shaken by the ordeal.

Staff managed to lock the offenders out of the premises and they left the scene on foot.

Police searched the nearby area, including Royden Park, Montgomery Hill and the car park at Thurstaston Common, and the Force helicopter was mobilised to help search a wider area.

The pub was sealed off for forensic examination by Crime Scene Investigators, which concluded this morning.

Nothing was stolen during the incident but detectives are appealing for anyone who witnessed it or saw anyone behaving suspiciously in the area to contact them at Birkenhead CID on 0151 777 2264 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
