The victim was discovered in the early hours of Saturday morning, lying on Utting Avenue East, in the Merseyside surburb of Norris Green.

He was taken to hospital in an ambulance, where he later died.

Police are not clear as to how he was injured but one line of inquiry is that he was hit by a vehicle.

Forenic teams are searching the busy dual carriageway, while door to door inquiries are on-going in the large council housing estate.

Officers also plan to examine CCTV from the area to identify any possible collisons.

Det Supt Ian Kemble said:' At this early stage of the investigation we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has any information to come forward.'

He added: 'We are trying to piece together what happened.'

In recent years, Norris Green has become synonymous with gang activity and violence.

This was illustrated by an ITV1 special 'Tonight with Trevor McDonald,' when journalist and presenter Sheila Fogarty and her crew were threatened by teenagers armed with glass bottles and stones, in January 2008.

Also SKY 1 programme Ross Kemp on Gangs featured the gang problems in Norris Green, in link to the murder of 11 year old Rhys Jones.

A post mortem examination of the 24 year old man is expected to take place later.
