The Peugeot 308 is to benefit from the introduction of a new six-speed manual gearbox, available on the S, Sport and SE HDi 110 models. Designed in-house, the new gearbox is said to enhance fuel consumption and interior engine noise, compared to the five-speed 'box.

Fitted with Michelin energy saver tyres, 308 models with the new gearbox will produce around 120g/km CO2 and fuel consumption of 62.7mpg. A six-speed ECG 'box is also available using latest generation electro-hydraulic actuators to speed up gear selection by 0.4 seconds.

Drivers will have the option to manually change gear without the use of a clutch or have it in fully automatic mode. This gearbox is available in the S and SE HDi 110 models only. The final new gearbox is a six-speed automatic fitted to the 2.0 litre HDi 136 diesel engine.

This automatic gearbox comes with 'Porsche Tiptronic' sequential control, previously seen on the V6 petrol and HDi engines of the 607 and 407 and will top the 308 diesel range.
