Volkswagen has developed a new seven-speed version of its acclaimed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) dual-clutch transmission.
A DSG is A sporty semi-automatic gearbox with automatic double-clutch system and sequential-shift gearchanges as well as a fully auto mode using a torque converter. Got all that?
It won't replace the current six-speed gearbox, as the new version is not designed to cope with power outputs beyond 168bhp and 184lb-ft of torque, thereby limiting its use in high-performance cars.
It will, however, be offered in mainstream models, starting with the Golf at the end of the year, but can be fitted in anything from the Polo supermini to the Passat large family car.
The new gearbox uses dry clutches, rather than the six-speed version's wet clutches, and can be mounted transversely.
Volkswagen has also announced that it is dropping its 113bhp 1.6-litre FSI petrol engine, replacing it with a turbocharged 1.4-litre TSI engine with 120bhp. The new engine will be fitted to the Golf, Golf Plus, Golf estate, Jetta and Passat later this year.

There is already a 7 speed DSG, it's in the Veyron, the only drawback was that 7th was a "virtual gear", although in essence it worked in the same way.
