Taken from tv licence website:

The law states that you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes, on any device, as they're being shown on TV. This includes TVs, computers, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and Blu-ray/DVD/VHS recorders.

You don't need a licence if you don't use any of these devices to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV - for example, if you use your TV only to watch DVDs or play video games, or you only watch ‘catch up’ services like BBC iPlayer or 4oD.

Do i read that right, if i only watch dvds on my tv, i dont need licence, if i only use my pc to watch iplayer 4od etc etc, i dont need licence as long as i dont watch programmes as they are being broadcast.

You only need a tv licence if you are watching live tv. So long as you only use it for dvd's and in demand websites then you don't need one smile

Yes, but you need to be careful, make sure you cover yourself so there is no doubt to anyone who may come knocking.

Make sure you phone and tell them, do not expect that stopping the payment is enough.

Make sure that you do not have an aerial/satelite/cable wires plugged in as that technically is still receiving. Or even nearby, just in case.

If you have a freeview/sky/cable box, disconnect it and store it away.

*Cable free for 14 months, no license, no issues.*

Disgusted with the way TV is nowadays I haven't watched the sh*t in over 4 years, only had the license so the kids could watch it, but now they have moved out... DVDs and PC is all I need.

I have 3 aerial/cable/sky wires in my house, all 3 have had the ends cut off and coiled back to their entry points, any inspector is more than welcome to come and have a look.

BTW, any license ispector has no rights to enter your home, but as I have nothing to hide, I have no problem if they did.

See my above post, inspectors can, and do, come knocking. Although they have no rights to enter your home, denying them would only make you look like you had something to hide.

If you have no physical ability to watch live TV, that is proof enough.

EDIT: My above post also includes portable aerials and TV's.

don't know.

I only watch catch up tv online, dont watch live tv, (honest) its all repeats anyway, so how can they class it as live, i refuse to pay for tv licence as 97% of programmes are repeats, so in therory you are paying for the same sh@te over and over again. i have aerial socket behind tv with nothing plugged into it, tv licence people can not expect me to remove it as its not mine its landlords.

I have 1 pc under my tv i use for iplayer, dvds, etc etc, and 1 pc for net use, its not my job to prove i dont watch live tv, its there job to prove i do. Good luck with that one.

just filled in form on website to say i dont need a licence.
www.tvlicensing.co.uk/notv

Why people dont just fill it in and get your refunds just watch what ever you want the next day on, iplayer etc etc.

If you have a tuner in your tv you need a licence,if you have a dvr with a tuner you need a licence, be careful, have a look what others have and are doing on the internet.

Basically if you have any tuners on equipment capable of receiving any on air television programmes that includes sat tv you need a licence doesn't matter if you have no antennae/aerial connected your equipment it is still capable, so you need a licence.

Of course it matter if you have an aerial, nearly every TV has a tuner built-in, some even with freeview, so the license would cover everyone who has a TV or to physically damage your TV to prevent it from doing so, which it doesnt.

From the TV licensing website:
DVD/Vide/Games Console:
Quote
You do not need a TV Licence if you only use your TV to watch videos and DVDs or as a monitor for your games console. If this is the case, please complete the online declaration form to tell us that you don't need a TV Licence. One of our Enforcement Officers may visit you to confirm your situation.

It makes no difference how you watch TV whether it's on your laptop, PC or mobile phone or through a digital box, DVD recorder or TV set. If you use any device to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV the law requires you to be covered by a TV Licence. You can buy a TV Licence online.

You will not need a TV Licence to view video clips on the internet as long as what you are viewing is not being shown on TV at the same time as you are viewing it.

I dont have a TV license and have received 20 letters from them over the past 2 years. I just ignore their harassment. The letters they send get more menacing threatening court and fines and threatening to send the Enforcement Officer around.

tuner or no tuner you dont need a licence

you dont need a licence to own a TV, computer or whatever.

you are not legally obliged to tell them you have a TV

you do not have to let a Licencesing enforcement officer into your home (unless thay have a warrant--but they can only get a warrant if they have evidence you are using a TV without a licence). You do not even have to open the door to them.

I have a sign by my doorbell that says that if they call they are committing a criminal offence because I have removed their implied right of access on to my property.

My TV is located in arear room out of sight but is only used to watch DVDs
