She's using it at the moment but will go back into bios and see what the display settings show and maybe have a fiddle if it looks like something within my skill/knowledge level. As mentioned in my PM to mark, given the old and new screens now come up black, i feel that the problem lies either with the cable/ribbon, driver/software or sound card. The latter most unlikely as we have video through the tv.
One thing that does stick out that may have been bypassed earlier is that i can stream a video through youtube or play a song on itunes through hdmi into tv and it works fine, unplug hdmi from laptop and therea no sound coming through the laptop like there otherwise would be. Does this narrow it down or make it more complicated??

That happens on my laptop when messing with hdmi and sound problem, either you wait about 15 seconds or manual un mute the sound.
Your problem isn't software. Hardware and Bios is my best bet.
