per machine, I've "booked" for the two machines and will at least try windows 10 on one.

How to Reserve Windows 10

Yes it is a Free Upgrade and its all above board.
Watching the vidoe, you book it and then you can schedule it.

Your within the guide lines for the spec.

My Personal note on this as amazing as it may look. Is to wait a few months.
I will upgrade but i dont know enough about the pros and cons.
There seems to be an upgrade advisor (Win 10 app) as part of the upgrade, which should tell you what will work and wont.

I've reserved mine for my Win 8.1 laptop but I have reservations. When I run the Check My PC test it tells me that my bluetooth devices (all Qualcomm) might not work after the upgrade.

I think I'll leave it a week or two until after it's available and see what the reports say.

The Get Windows 10 App is available on most PCs running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows 8.1 Update.

You won't see the app if:

Your device isn't running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
Need to check what version of Windows you are running? See here for instructions.
You are running an Enterprise version of Windows which is not eligible for this offer.
Windows automatic updates are not enabled on your device.
Your device does not meet the minimum system requirements.
Your device is not connected to the Internet.
Your device is eligible however, we are still working on updates that may improve your device’s experience, like getting a new driver.

I'm running 8.1 pro version with media centre. I have the icon in my notification area today inviting me to reserve windows 10. It tells me I will lose media centre if I upgrade. I believe that the upgrade will be like for like, for example I will be upgraded to the pro version instead of the home version.

I see classic shell have released a start menu patch for windows 10 as Ms still haven't got the start menu right. By default you get the start screen but you can change this in settings to the new start menu with live tiles.

The icons appear to have been revamped and traditional look and feel of windows is changing to a minimalist design. The dark mode looks good if it's in the final release.

Windows 10 is set to be the final release as they want us all to be using windows. Updates will be available and download automatically as they come out.

I will test out windows 10 but not on my main PC.

Thanks for your info Mark.

Your Update :

I seen the update to day.
If you click on the 3 horizontal lines which is in the top left side of the update prompt window, it will fly out like the image below.

I clicked on check my pc and it said i will have to uninstall my Internet security and firewall before i can upgrade. (It can be reinstalled later). But its worth checking what you need to prepare for or even later why it wont update for you.

I also have a few programs that wont work correctly so i'm happy to wait until software is more compatible.

I need to dig and find out how long this update is available as it was rumored to be available for the first 12 months. I'm sure we will get lots and lots of reminders if we have not upgraded.

Not found roll back info yet but this is how i would prefer to do it on a clean install.

Windows 10 can be reinstalled cleanly if need be after free upgradeWindows 10 can be reinstalled cleanly if need be after free upgrade

Click Me

For now it just says you can but not exactly how or what you will need to do to do it.

I think this July the 29th will be the day that Microsoft either Ruled the world or killed the world. Imagine if there was a delete all code in the source code !! That's gonna be a mess to clean up.

I want feedback myself before i upgrade, but i do prefer the clean install over an upgrade as it never seems to go as smooth as it should. Anyway the world waits microsoft rolls out its best OS yet or the worst.

Just a side Note : This upgrade is free for a year. There is no issue at all if you hold out for a few months.

Ask yourself why do Microsoft have service packs ?

They never get it quiet right out the door lol.

Food for thought, just saying your under no pressure to reserve or update.

Microsoft seems to be wanting everybody on the new Windows. This is set be similar to the Apple OS, as they release different versions you're updates come automatically.

My new Norton software has changed in a similar way. They have just called it Norton Security and dropped the year. The idea is you upgrade to their new software and its auto updated, no new version required to be installed every twelve months or so.

That's great but if your old PC can cope with the new OS in years to come. For example, this new Windows would work better on a new PC. Windows Hello needs new hardware to work properly and Windows 8 definitely benefited from a new touch screen PC.

We have twelve months to decide and the jury is well and truly out on this one. I'm sure we would all welcome feedback on here from anyone who has upgraded and what they think, good or bad.

Running windows 7
I'm not subscribed to windows 10 New Update.

Last night i installed a load of updates from Microsoft.

Now I have skype starting on start up.

One drive is now syncing files also.

And Outlook is now preparing to run for the first time.
And estimates about 15 mins to start as it reads all my files and folders hummmmmm think
My pst files are about 3GB Each so . . . . Yawn . . .

Looks like a load of security updates for Microsoft office.

I decide to wait and see if Outlook was any different ??
Nope !!

7 Days to go until those of you have subscribed to the New windows 10 and all it has or has not to offer.

July 29th "W" Windows day lol

I've noticed that for ages Mark. Computers do what they want to do first and then let you have a go on them when they're ready. Everything is "automatic". Tried scheduling and that doesn't work so good either. At least with the old DOS3 onwards you could tell the machine what to do, not any more.

For Mark, I had windows 7 it took around 5mins to boot up then like 3mins before you could do anything.

I've been in the windows Insider program from the start at 1st it was pants as it crashed doing anything but now I wouldn't be without it.

Boot up is down to 2mins and I can do anything, no waiting for thing to load, been playing my Xbox one on it this week with no lag one thing I had to do was to change the setting to making it think I was in USA to make Cortana work which I'm loving.

And if you don't like it you can go back to windows 7,8 or 8.1 and yes the start button is there lol

Appalling that we have to wait so long for computers to boot.

I'm Windows 7 32 bit, Core 2 Duo, 2.66Ghz and after tweaking I get 45 seconds to log-in screen or 1 minute 10 seconds until browser is up and running.

My first 3 computers booted up a lot faster than that 40 years ago!

Don't know what to do about Windows 10, this machine is too old to support it.

I reboot once a week, my pc sleeps after an hour, and hibernates after 4hrs. So the majority of the times, im up n running in seconds from sleep and under a min for hibernate.

And my pc is almost 4yrs old.

Waking up is the modern booting up.

Find the occasional problem with hardware or accessories when computers come out of from hibernation so I tend to avoid.

My computers on a UPS which draws quite a bit of power even when computer is off so I manually switch off.

4 years old is hardly out the box grin

Just ditched my old one from 95/96, DOS5 I think it was then. Upgraded it myself as time went on but it's just got too rickety and got a newy. Still seems to drag it's arris to what I was expecting but I'll get used to it. Probably it will be my last one anyway, too many peripherals that I don't need. Apps all over the place, load anything new and it's another set of passwords to get weighed off. I'm getting creaky myself now.

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit, 4Gb RAM, same CPU and an SSD and mine is at the login screen after about 20 seconds. Its a shade faster with 8.1

Window 10 out in the uk at 5am tomorrow

But you really don’t have to stay up. Unlike during the launch of its Windows 7 operating system, back in 2009, Microsoft isn’t encouraging fans to host launch parties smile

I cant remember a bug free launch lol

And its for them reasons "i'm out" lol

I'm truly old school and believe only in a clean install for a new Operating system. Upgrading has a track record of not being the smoothest.

How ever my little laptop has the word Test me on it now lol

If you are going through with it, back up any personal data that's pictures and documents before you hit the magic button.

Windows 10 Makes it difficult to keep your existing default browser. This is how you change it to your choice.

Running Windows 10 on this laptop HP pavilion g6, took an hour to download and setup, I presume explorer whatever it's called works as I use Chrome that updated no problem, seems to be ok not had any problems, it was a bit slow but has speeded up to it's normal speed, more like windows 8, but changed it to the way I use it on 7, not a problem, still awaiting for it to crawl up and die on me and make me put it back to 7, but it's working, makes me so upset not being able to call it namrs, maybe when they email me to do my next little Asus that should be interesting

I upgraded on Friday, my machine was ready for rebuilding. I was getting a little tired of 7 and just can't get on with 8 / 8.1.

I must say that I'm really impressed. The start menu is good and boot up time is incredible - just 4 seconds from power on.

Seems that Microsoft have relaxed some of the requirements so my PC is now Windows 10 compatible.

Switched upgrade on this morning and updated to Windows 10 this afternoon - first time it failed (the "10 second" wait carried on for over half an hour), closed the window, started it off again and everything went well.

I'm impressed so far, everything runs as expected and smoother/faster than Windows 7.

My first roll back.
Sony vio

No network cards detected.
4 media devices unknown.

Would not let me reset the win 10 to fix possible issues. So restore to 7 was the only option, without a network or internet access.

Rolling back it says some programs may need to be reinstalled, but it seems to have come back good.

Roll back, only took 15 - 20 mins.
But it worked drivers come good, my docs my pictures all good.

(This wasn't my laptop) im still waiting for the thumbs up on mine.

Generally behaving itself here, one weird crash at logging on which it recovered from.

One strange anomaly was that while most settings were Uk as picked up from Windows 7, the "Display Language" was still US which meant it didn't automatically pick up the UK/GB language pack, speech packs, text-to-speech and speech-to-text packs - installing them to about half an hour after I hit the download button.

Zonealarm free antivirus+firewall didn't survive the transition correctly, had to un-install and install the latest version. There was no warning anywhere about this, I spotted in the log files that Zonealarm had failed to install and then realised it wasn't working.

It knew about my printer but didn't bother downloading or installing the drivers until I switched it on which had me panicking for 30 seconds.

Beware when you shut Windows 10 down, it kills the display quite early in the shutdown, the computer carries on for a while after (much longer than Windows 7 did), if you switch the mains off in that "blank" period you will probably corrupt something somewhere.

The weird app that just displays the name "Photos" is good in many ways, but absolutely useless in others - eg you can't even find out in which folder the photo you are looking at is stored. I'm sure this will improve. I chose not to allow Windows to organise my photos in the setup option, I didn't want it moving them around.

Generally I'm very pleased, a lot of buffering and caching going on in the background with better process switching makes it a lot faster than Windows 7 in many instances.

So after the upgrade you have 30 days to decide to roll back or not, and if you do you can still try again in the future.

My own little laptop is still patiently waiting lol

dd click on the app then click on the clog(setting) then stroll down to sources and it shows you where your pics are wink

If you need to install or reinstall Windows 10

PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD

Before you begin

Make sure you have:
An internet connection (internet service provider fees may apply).
Sufficient data storage available on a computer, USB or external drive for the download.
A blank USB or DVD (and DVD burner) with at least 4 GB of space if you want to create media. We recommend using a blank USB or blank DVD, because any content on it will be deleted.
Read the System Requirements.
If you will be installing the operating system for the first time, you will need your Windows product key (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx). For more information about product keys and when they are required, visit the FAQ page.

Use the media creation tool to download Windows. This tool provides the best download experience for customers running Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. To learn how to use the tool, go to the Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool page. Tool includes:

File formats optimized for download speed.
Built in media creation options for USBs and DVDs.
Optional conversion to ISO file format.

If you’re on an Enterprise edition, the media creation tool won’t work for an upgrade. Please see the Volume Licensing Service Center for more information.

Yep, it tells me the two main directories that it looks in - I know them. But to identify which subdirectory a specific picture is in is not possible as far as I can see.

(I have about 350 sub-directories containing 34,000 images)

Excellent, tried that last night and it hardly gave any file info, now like you say it gives a whole load of stuff.

There's a few things extra seeming to popping up here and there, I think it must have been doing a lot of indexing in the background, I have a ridiculous number of files (close to 500,000) and drives were rattling away for the first few hours but are now quiet most of the time.

I'm going to have to get rid of gesturing when I can find the setting, every time I knock the mouse out the way to write something on paper, it minimises the window I'm looking at.

Clean windows 10 Install

If you want to perform a clean install on your PC, or if your PC doesn't have an operating system, you can use the DVD or USB. Here's how: Scroll down to the bottom.

Click me

Its a little confusing how the activation will work on a clean install, i would hope it implies it will accept a windows 7 key.

Clean install is my preferred option.

do a hidden search on large files.
You may find the index file is +4gb.

In windows 7 you could move the storage of this index file to a 2nd drive.
Leaving more space on the os drive.

I don't think we still have the traditional search tool, might have to do a DOS or powershell type search and sort frown

Arghhhh - I found the command prompt yesterday and lost it again today .... found it right click on start button doh.

My Netbook finally went through the upgrade.
I want to do a new post as on closer inspection its not quite right.

* My Internet Security Has Gone Completely. Antivirus + Firewall And replaced with microsoft's.
* 3 Devices are Now un known.
* And them Custom Settings on the Install to watch for.

I ran the pc checker prior to the upgrade.
I was advised only 1 program needed to uninstalled to be compatible. There was no warnings about my Internet Security Firewall + Antivirus being completely removed. So i want to dig further into why that's possible or happened.

If you can navigate to the device manager in windows 10 then check all your devices have loaded up correctly !!
Mine seems to borking just fine but. . . . Ive not tested everything.

And if you do the express install your allowing alot of data to go to microsoft and 3rd parties, but why hide them away.

If i get time later i will post up the failings ive found so you can be more informed and check your self.

I'm now rolling back to 7 lol.

some help with windows 10

1. how to find command prompt (right click on the start button (bottom left looks like a window)

2. While this backup feature isn't new, you can now access a particular file's previous versions by right-clicking it, selecting Properties, and clicking the brand new Previous Versions tab. Super handy

3. you can now Snap up to 4 time this function that lets you quickly arrange apps side by side, with a new quadrant layout that lets you split your display up among up to four apps. There's also support for multiple virtual desktops (finally), so you can keep all your work apps in one place and quickly slide back to the desktop

4. To get Cortana working outside the US do the following:

First you will have to change 'Region and Language' settings. For this go to desktop control panel and select Clock, Language, and Region from the right hand side
Click on Region and change the following:

In the Format tab, set format as English (United States)
Set Home Location in the Location tab as United States
Finally, in the Administrative tab, set Current System Local to English (United States)

Also, set English (United States) as your primary display language to make the aforementioned changes work fine
In case you have not installed it yet, head over to Add a Language and choose it from the list and then set as primary
After you have made the changes, restart your PC. Once the system is up, you will find Cortana ready to assist you with information you are looking for

Also, you need to sign in using your Microsoft account. You can either use your keyboard or, microphone to interact with Cortana.

If you are a non-native speaker and not comfortable with pronunciation, you can change the settings accordingly. For this, go to Setting>> choose System>> Speech>> set Speech language as English (US)>> click the box saying Use speech pattern for non native speakers of this language.

Windows 10 had a major update starting 5/8/2015 (so big they were considering calling it SP1 but changed their minds at the last minute).

Since that update I have found two bugs that weren't there before hand.....

The desktop icon text shadows won't switch off after you've switched them on or chosen a theme with them on. A reboot fixed it, but they came back on when desktop refreshed, they seem to have stayed off since.

If you have adobe-flash and a java app running then shutdown, it sometimes closes processes in the wrong order and can crash, it does a recovery and switches back on (instead of off!).

Also found out you can use Windows 7/8 modifier commands in the search like size:gigantic etc

Many thanks Mark for running us through your experiences with
Win10. I'm on Win7 on a PC and wife's laptop at present and
I decided to wait a while until the dust settles before going
to 10. I'm sure there will be a number of fixes in the first few months and Win7 has always been reasonable for me. I reverted to IE10 from IE11 because of problems with some
websites but I've now gone to 11 full time. You seem to be having similar issues - so thanks for the info and I'll be
interested in seeing how this progresses.

I have gone to Windows 10 - concerns so far :-

No DVD player ( you have to pay extra if you want one ) I solved this by downloading a VLC Media Player for free.

CD Player via Windows Media Player - works when it feels like it, very intermittent.

Screensaver wont work at all no matter what settings you try.

Otherwise appears to function OK - have not tried the Browser, stayed with Firefox.

I am still feeling my way around - felt I had no option but to change to 10 as I have heard that all other versions of Windows will become unsupported quite soon as Microsoft wants to get rid.
Only time will tell I suppose.

I thought that Windows Media Centre PC's got the DVD app free on upgrade to Windows 10. I don't think any other versions of Windows had DVD playback.

Just upgraded my Laptop as well, went smoothly as my desktop upgrade did. Not often that I praise microsoft upgrades but Windows 10 is good.

Recommend that even if you did not do express settings and switched off all the privacy stuff during install, its still worth going through all the items on start-settings-privacy as there are many things left switched on.

Windows Media Center is no longer part of Windows. In Windows 8 it was a separate download for users who purchased Windows 8 Professional or purchased a device with it loaded already.

Microsoft announced that after a dozen years, it would no longer include support for Windows Media Center (WMC) in Windows 10.

After saying I wasn't going to upgrade, I have...

I waited two weeks for download to appear after placing my reservation but it has been worth it.

The upgrade process was smooth despite taking two and half hours.

My windows 8.1 pro laptop is now running windows 10 pro.

All my software has gone back on and works well.

In conclusion I would recommend all windows 8 users to upgrade.

I've had Windows 10 for a couple of weeks now with no issues until today when I got 'Critical Error Start Menu and Cordola not working' Makes computer pretty useless as nothing works. Following the instructions on the link below i started in safe mode (press ctrl+alt+delete, and in the bottom right hand corner you click the power button. Before you click 'restart', hold down the shift key until the next screen is displayed (blue). Then click troubleshoot, advanced options, start-up settings, restart. Once it restarts, press the F4 key, and when it restarts you will be in safe mode.
Nosed about on internet and it seems that there is a problem between W10 and Avast. No problem with AVG.
I uninstalled Avast and installed AVG and seem to be up and running for a while.
Reading the link this seems like a huge problem with no sign of being fixed right now

Story so far...

I've been running windows 10 for a couple of weeks myself now. I reading reports of some apps such as the new solitaire card game which comes with 10 having annoying adverts popping up. The only way to remove these is to pay for the full app versions.

I have a theory on this, I paid to upgrade to Windows 10 pro and I don't have any such pop ups.

Windows 10 comes as a free upgrade but hidden costs are there..

That said Windows 10 pro has reinforced my faith in Microsoft after the debarkle that was Windows 8.

Changed my Acer Aspire laptop over from Win 8.1 to Win 10 the other day. Took approx three hours. All went smoothly. No problems whatsoever.

Can't tell an awful lot of difference though. I've no interest in using Cortana or Edge.

Edge has the advantage that it does not allow Java which is a security hazard.

If its a dual core processor or above you should notice a significant speed increase in certain operations - though not so apparent when browsing advert laden websites - something that even Google are concerned at and its their major income.

Some programs I use are running at least four times faster, I think this is mostly through better caching on disk intensive activities, the programs concerned appear to be those that access large number of files.

Here is a weekly graph of the performance of my computer since I installed Windows 10, It started fairly well getting a lot better over the first two weeks, then the updates started coming in and destroyed the performance.

Timed updates, so the response from new Windows 10 customers at first is, "Its fast and I like it" now they turn the screw.

Vista had this issue at one time.

1. Reboot and try again.
2. System restore to an earlier date.

There was a few other ways that told windows you had no updates and to scan again, but i forgot how that was done.

Leave it over night, as there servers may be having problems coping with the updates and you get stuck . . .

Many thanks Mark.

I rebooted and this gave windows update a shake up.

Some updates from Microsoft wouldn't install such as for office 2010.

Think this was the spanner in the works.

Bad updates.

Thanks again smile

I've been told there is a big Windows 10 update in October to fix many of the bugs reported.
When exactly i don't know so there could be more peace of mind not too far away.

The October update that Mark mentioned is rolling out, if your Windows 10 computer and internet is a bit slow while this downloads don't be surprised.

Takes a while to switch off while it does the final parts of the update as well - I didn't bother hanging around to find out how long.

I got the October update yesterday. Rebooted and all is working fine. Can't say I noticed and difference though. Start-up is perhaps slightly slower.

Still not updated, waiting for bugs to be sorted and have kept an eye on this thread. I noticed it's been quiet for a few weeks and unsure whether thats a sign saying things are now smooth with Win 10 so maybe now is the time to update?

I upgraded the other week but I went back to windows 7 on Sunday,it was ok just when I was downloading photos off my camera was what me change back.On 7 the thing comes up to import & it just imports the recent photos I've taken but on 10 it kept wanting to download the ones I've already got so I had about 4 copies of every pic.If I had more time I probably could of figured it out.

Things like photos, music etc are set to use the default windows 10 setting. If you'd turned that off you would have had control. You also need to go through all the security settings are put them how you want them not how window wants you to have them.

I had problems with upgrading my laptop a few months ago.
Now i'm happy to say its gone through, all devices are now correctly installed.
And even better news is that my internet security (Bitdefender) is also compatible now and come over no problem.

I'm thinking the octobre updates window performed for windows 10 have helped me.

I was 7 to 10

Could just be a random or maybe google earth needed an update that has now happened, I've not had either the online google earth or standalone google earth crash under Windows 10 - prior to 10 I had to use an old version of standalone google earth and the online one was always a bit flakey.

Microsoft has been testing a fresh update to Windows 10 for the past few months, and now it's ready to release it to everyone. More than 110 million machines are now running Windows 10, and they'll all be offered the update today. The update includes a number of fixes and UI changes that were originally planned for the final version of Windows 10.

Just got the November update installed. Again, all running fine but can't tell much difference. Generally pleased with Win 10 so far. Definitely faster than 8.1. Didn't like the Start menu though so changed to Classic Shell.

Recently cloned and replaced my 500GB hard drive with a 240GB SSD. Great performance. Boots in approx 20 seconds, shuts down in 8 seconds. Highly recommended improvement. smile

Got that update yesterday, it started just as I was installing another program, ended up with the computer completely locked (unresponsive).

Hit the power button and it went through the usual shutdown/update/reboot/update/reboot cycle and everything seems fine.

I was going to run the get windows app to go from windows 7 to 10.but I am now getting the following message. windows 10 can't be installed on this PC. My display is not compatible with windows 10.
Display Adaptor NVIDA GEFORCE 6150 LE.
check with manufacturer for support.
Have been on NVIDA driver upgrade and my current driver is the latest for windows 7 but obviously not suited to windows 10. There is a list of various 600 series drivers that suit windows 10. but don't want to down load a driver that will then not let me use windows 7 till I have time to do the windows 10 upgrade.

If your computer is a desktop then you could just buy a more suitable graphics card and use that. I got one for £16 off ebay.

NVIDIA say the 6150 will never be supported for Windows 10.

Thank you for the reply. Will do as you say and then install the windows 10 during the holiday period. Had hoped it was as simple as that.

Has the time come?
To convert from Win 7 to Win 10 I mean

Following initial advice from Mark I delayed rushing to Win 10 when it was first introduced - let us face it the track record of MSoft "getting things right" is rather poor to say the least. However, since then there have been two upgrades in which I suppose they SHOULD have sorted out teething problems.

HAVE THEY?
Are there still some "oh bugger" issues (that cannot be cleared up with a bit of common sense)?

A few things bother me a bit
1. Will my 2 year old wireless Epson printer still work (and/ or will I be able to GET it to work - not very techy)?
2. Will my full suite of Office 2007 still work? I use that a lot.

My use of computers (laptops) is modest ie Office (Word and Excel) lots of web browsing, NEVER play games, lots of email. LIKE FIREFOX as a browser and trust it!

I suppose I also have a background worry that MSoft is too invasive and will want to spy on me. Frankly I do nothing that would worry me on that score - indeed, if they (or GCHQ or the Pentagon) care to send me their email address I will put them as bcc on all my emails. No, my worry is MSoft passing/ selling my information to OTHER organisations who will then pester me with adverts. Making Windows 10 "free" is fair enough but there HAS to be an ulterior motive so that MSoft can recover the $$$ in some other way - called advertising

I have two lappys that can be upgraded (one at a time)
An HP G62 that is about 4 years old. Decent machine with Win 7 and 4 gig RAM AMD 320 dual core

A rather splendid Lenovo Thinkpad T430 with SSD and 8 gig ram and Intel i5 processor. Running Win 7 professional

Mark especially, your thoughts will be appreciated

I wouldn't hesitate - its not perfect but no version of Windows is. Problems that are blamed on Windows can be down to 3rd party uncertified drivers, which you sometimes have little choice but to use. Microsoft spent a lot of effort in trying to get more drivers compliant for Windows 10.

It took me two years to get Windows 7 to have no error or warning messages appearing in the log files, something that I would not attempt to repeat on any version of Windows, it was a satisfying challenge at the time but not realistic on most machines.

I guess that ultimately I HAVE to go down the Win 10 route so suppose sooner the better. That then leads to a few (ha ha) other questions.

The older laptop (HP G62 with Win7 Home etc) is to be passed on to someone else and I want to ensure it is absolutely stripped of all my personal/ significant business data. When I have passed on machines in the past I have used Dban to over-write the hard disk and have then reloaded the same version of Windows (and spent ages doing the updates but that is another story).

From what I read it LOOKS LIKE I should be able to
a. Download Win 10 'installation media' onto a USB
b. Use Dban to wipe the disk on the HP
c. Load Win 10 from the installation media USB - using the product key for the original Win 7 that was on the HP

Does that make sense? Or
Will it be (secure) enough to ignore Dban and simply install Win 10 from the installation media?

Advice appreciate

Not quite - you need to upgrade to Windows 10 first so that Microsoft's database associates that product key with Windows 10 instead of Windows 7.

You cannot simply use a Windows 7 product key for Windows 10 if the product key database still has it as Windows 7.

I had trouble downloading the right version of Windows 10 that matched the product key database - there are more version than they normally mention - unfortunately you don't find out until right at the end of the install. Even interrogating Microsoft's database doesn't tell you exactly which version is correct.

You need to run a scandisk.

My Computer.
Right click on your C;\ Drive
Go to Properties
Click the Tab Tools
Click error-checking

It may moan about the disk is in use and would you like to schedule a scan at the next reboot, say yes and then reboot.
It will do any repairs as it starts up.

Your basically right now backing up a damaged file system that may not recover when you need it.

Ran scandisk - prompt said no need to run it no problems, ran it anyway and result was no errors

So will wait and see if error message reappears

What is on the show detail tab, on that error page.
It may have detected a hardware fault on the drive, as they normally have smart drive monitoring such things.

What age is the computer ?

when you type cmd and it shows in the possible programs, right click and select run as administrator.
if you still cant do chkdsk then do the tools again, but this time make sure both boxes are ticked.

Do you have a backup ?

Microsoft really wants you to upgrade to Windows 10.

The American tech giant has been aggressive pushing updates to its desktop operating system onto its users — and drawn significant criticism for the techniques employed.

The latest: Automatically upgrading users if they click X to close a pop-up about the update.

The new tactic was spotted by Brad Chacos over at PC World. For months, GWX (Get Windows X), the app responsible for all the Windows 10 update prompts, has been pushing updates onto users, to which the only way to opt-out was to press the X in the top-right corner to close the app (just like you do any other app).

But now GWX has changed its behaviour, and will take you pressing the X as a signal that you're happy to carry out the update at a time it provides. Instead, you have to manually change or remove the update time if you want to opt-out.

So if you're used to clicking X to get rid of the pop-up because you really don't want to (or can't, for software compatibility reasons) upgrade, then you might find yourself upgrading all of a sudden anyway.

There are reports on social media that users are being tricked into upgrading this way — much to their annoyance

Yes Im getting that message many times a day some days and I just click it off - so are you suggesting to just blue up the time box and delete it? then click off the upgrade to 10 box?(No point me altering the time,to the future, because I dont want it at all.)

I've just gone back to windows 7 after 6 months of windows 10, far too many compatibility issues with windows 10 causing pc to freeze and crash. It seemed fine at first but got worse as time went on, all is good in the world again now.
My advice, if you haven't upgraded yet don't bother.

I don't think its Windows 10 that causes the crashes, its usually browsers or flash.

Mine is really stable now, must be more than 500 hours since the last crash.

Google Chrome has and Firefox had a tendency to freeze, I've never had a freeze or crash when neither of those are running even when I have a lot of background stuff running.

There are a couple of Microsoft services that I switched off early on.

I find it ok
Never had a crash with Windows 7 and no issues with 10 upgrade.

Try running malwarebytes, you will probably find its crap causing crashes.

Have malware running Mark. Flash player is the problem, I believe it is no longer supported by Windows but many sites still use it
