Got that update yesterday, it started just as I was installing another program, ended up with the computer completely locked (unresponsive).

Hit the power button and it went through the usual shutdown/update/reboot/update/reboot cycle and everything seems fine.

I was going to run the get windows app to go from windows 7 to 10.but I am now getting the following message. windows 10 can't be installed on this PC. My display is not compatible with windows 10.
Display Adaptor NVIDA GEFORCE 6150 LE.
check with manufacturer for support.
Have been on NVIDA driver upgrade and my current driver is the latest for windows 7 but obviously not suited to windows 10. There is a list of various 600 series drivers that suit windows 10. but don't want to down load a driver that will then not let me use windows 7 till I have time to do the windows 10 upgrade.

If your computer is a desktop then you could just buy a more suitable graphics card and use that. I got one for £16 off ebay.

NVIDIA say the 6150 will never be supported for Windows 10.

Thank you for the reply. Will do as you say and then install the windows 10 during the holiday period. Had hoped it was as simple as that.

Has the time come?
To convert from Win 7 to Win 10 I mean

Following initial advice from Mark I delayed rushing to Win 10 when it was first introduced - let us face it the track record of MSoft "getting things right" is rather poor to say the least. However, since then there have been two upgrades in which I suppose they SHOULD have sorted out teething problems.

HAVE THEY?
Are there still some "oh bugger" issues (that cannot be cleared up with a bit of common sense)?

A few things bother me a bit
1. Will my 2 year old wireless Epson printer still work (and/ or will I be able to GET it to work - not very techy)?
2. Will my full suite of Office 2007 still work? I use that a lot.

My use of computers (laptops) is modest ie Office (Word and Excel) lots of web browsing, NEVER play games, lots of email. LIKE FIREFOX as a browser and trust it!

I suppose I also have a background worry that MSoft is too invasive and will want to spy on me. Frankly I do nothing that would worry me on that score - indeed, if they (or GCHQ or the Pentagon) care to send me their email address I will put them as bcc on all my emails. No, my worry is MSoft passing/ selling my information to OTHER organisations who will then pester me with adverts. Making Windows 10 "free" is fair enough but there HAS to be an ulterior motive so that MSoft can recover the $$$ in some other way - called advertising

I have two lappys that can be upgraded (one at a time)
An HP G62 that is about 4 years old. Decent machine with Win 7 and 4 gig RAM AMD 320 dual core

A rather splendid Lenovo Thinkpad T430 with SSD and 8 gig ram and Intel i5 processor. Running Win 7 professional

Mark especially, your thoughts will be appreciated

I wouldn't hesitate - its not perfect but no version of Windows is. Problems that are blamed on Windows can be down to 3rd party uncertified drivers, which you sometimes have little choice but to use. Microsoft spent a lot of effort in trying to get more drivers compliant for Windows 10.

It took me two years to get Windows 7 to have no error or warning messages appearing in the log files, something that I would not attempt to repeat on any version of Windows, it was a satisfying challenge at the time but not realistic on most machines.

I guess that ultimately I HAVE to go down the Win 10 route so suppose sooner the better. That then leads to a few (ha ha) other questions.

The older laptop (HP G62 with Win7 Home etc) is to be passed on to someone else and I want to ensure it is absolutely stripped of all my personal/ significant business data. When I have passed on machines in the past I have used Dban to over-write the hard disk and have then reloaded the same version of Windows (and spent ages doing the updates but that is another story).

From what I read it LOOKS LIKE I should be able to
a. Download Win 10 'installation media' onto a USB
b. Use Dban to wipe the disk on the HP
c. Load Win 10 from the installation media USB - using the product key for the original Win 7 that was on the HP

Does that make sense? Or
Will it be (secure) enough to ignore Dban and simply install Win 10 from the installation media?

Advice appreciate

Not quite - you need to upgrade to Windows 10 first so that Microsoft's database associates that product key with Windows 10 instead of Windows 7.

You cannot simply use a Windows 7 product key for Windows 10 if the product key database still has it as Windows 7.

I had trouble downloading the right version of Windows 10 that matched the product key database - there are more version than they normally mention - unfortunately you don't find out until right at the end of the install. Even interrogating Microsoft's database doesn't tell you exactly which version is correct.

You need to run a scandisk.

My Computer.
Right click on your C;\ Drive
Go to Properties
Click the Tab Tools
Click error-checking

It may moan about the disk is in use and would you like to schedule a scan at the next reboot, say yes and then reboot.
It will do any repairs as it starts up.

Your basically right now backing up a damaged file system that may not recover when you need it.

Thanks for the reply and advice Mark

Ran scandisk - prompt said no need to run it no problems, ran it anyway and result was no errors

So will wait and see if error message reappears

What is on the show detail tab, on that error page.
It may have detected a hardware fault on the drive, as they normally have smart drive monitoring such things.

What age is the computer ?
