Hi I was asked to look at my bro in laws laptop as it was running like chubby brown in treacle.

Anyway went to Add/Remove programs and delete many sill things with names like savedosh/vouchcoup/buynsave and so on (not real programs just giving idea).

Deleted all web browseres just kept IE and reset it to beginning, noticed when started that it has a search engine related to Omiga which cant be changed, tried removing Omiga in Add/Remove but it wont go, asks for a word enter it and still no joy, have installed Spybot and ran Windows Defender full scans and still no joy. Reading up it seems omiga is in general harmless virus wise but an annoyance as it is just adds, redirects you everywhere making it difficult to use web and generally slowing laptop down.

I could possibly format the laptop if that would remove it, however it has Microsoft Home & Student on it and I cant find the KEY to download it back after if that was possible.

If anyone knows how to remove Omiga advice is welcome, second choice would be format if I could get Home & Student put back on.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks will try tomorrow, and let you know, really hoped removing all junk and scans would do it. Even deleted the folders in Programmefilesx86 place. Just this last thing but it keeps adding others when IE is opened.

Click start
Type in msconfig
Will bring up a box
Click services
At the bottom it should say hide all Microsoft services.tick that
You should see a list of services..stop the ones you don't recognise.
There is also a start up tab you could have a look there aswell.
Hope this helps

Done all above, managed to remove omiga at last thanks, issue now is still getting ad's loads of the on IE, finally managed to get IE to let me install the Mcafee that he had purchased so ran a scan all is fine restart and ads are back, cant get Adblock on ie and it wont click on sites after web search.

However after reading LOTS online the last thing I need to try now is got to IE and reset, then whilst I get 2/3 mins of relative normality download Firefox, close IE immediately, Open Firefox and get Adblocker on immediately, close firefox. Delete IE reopen firefox and all should be fine.

If it works I can then either remove ad programs I can find in add/remove, then the programs 86 folder, registry and so on reinstall IE do Adblocker and start again, I have decided if it works on Firefox I will leave as is, bro in law can get use to it after 4-5 days of crap I had sorting it.

Will again post tomorrow or Monday if it works, hate these idiots who invent such disruptive software.

Thanks for all advice above it has helped massively and hopefully pointed me to a conclusion in a day or two.

You dont have a virus.
you have mall ware.

Install mall were bytes its free.

https://www.malwarebytes.org

Free anti virus software does not scan for mall were only threats and virus.

Give it a go you will be surprised.

Also make sure all system updates are up to date. This is also important to prevent a repeat situation.

Hope that helps.

Then try and work out how you got the dam thing in the first place.

* With the bad ones you may have to manually remove them via the previous removal links but there could be others your not aware of that's why its important to run a mall ware scan.

Simple but knowledgeable video to explain mall-ware to you.

Cheers Mark, will give a go later, would spybot not do the same?

Also when finished do I leave windows defender running or will Mcafee be ok, I guess I should leave Adblock on browser?

I know you can have too much protection so what is needed please.

Mcafee will stay as he purchased it.

Windows Defender, formerly known as Microsoft AntiSpyware, is a software product that helps combat malware. Windows Defender was initially an antispyware program; it is included with Windows Vista and Windows 7

But as you have already found out its not as good as it could be.

SpyBot Search & Destroy is a powerful application that targets and eliminates malicious types of programs such as malware off your computer.

It will pretty much do the same thing, i think the best way to look at it, is what results you get from it.

I use mall ware bytes personally, so i cant comment on Spybot.
But you get what you pay for.

You can have all the prevention you want or ever need but if the owner of the laptop is not up to speed then they can let any threat in at any time. Its a constant battle with tech and limited knowledge.

Normally the anti mall ware software will guide you to the correct decision, where as anti virus can give you too many confusing options if you don't understand.

Making sure you do Microsoft updates every week / month will help considerably as there is a new scan pretty much download as part of the updates every month.

The worst case is that they fall for ransom wear.
This is when your asked to pay money to unlock your pc.

May be an idea to turn on parental controls if they do not understand and create an Admin account for your self.

Cheers again Mark, I know what you mean and what I can now do.

Problem was it's my bro in laws laptop, when I started looking Weds he had installed Mcafee but not registered his product num so it was just there doing nothing. Same with Windows defender Turned off, windows firewall off so from what I could see he had NO PROTECTION at all.

He has presumed that as Mcaffe was on his desktop it was pre installed and running, same as security settings and so on, nothing at all was monitoring his or wife and kids internet use.

As I say seems to run fine now using firefox and I have seurity up and running so may well leave it there, if it needs anymore doing he will probably need professional help as I feel I have done what I can comfortably do, I would never try something I wasn't comfortable with as I know it could cause more issues.

Thanks for all who have helped with this.

Im hoping to put a basic security topic together with some basic pointers for users to look over and maybe learn.

Viruses can disable security also so don't put all the blame on your brother.

If its as you sau.
run and the uninstall a few mallware programmes.

Note having multiple antivirus products on your computer can slow it down as they can fight with each other and hog resources.

So if your trying out a product and don't want it uninstall it again.

* if your brothers laptop continues with issues i would be inclined to restore to factory default.

* with an outlook.com account you have a free version of office products like word and excel.
