Poor little collie dog belted out from a house straight into the side of a car and took a tumble under rear wheel. It managed to limp in shock to pavement and collapsed. Got up and started limping away. It responded to "sit" and lay shaking till a lady found owners. Only visible injuries were small bit of skin off near eye and a bigger piece on hind leg. Messed itself with the shock. Driver of vehicle was badly shaken and upset. Owners were understanding given three of us explaining it was dogs fault. Owners said it was due to go vets today anyway but we suggested it go straight away.
Wondered what the position is for the owners if they take it to vets. Is it up to the owners to decide if they want it xrayed or can they just decide to have it put down with vets opinion>. Never had a pet but I presume you can get some insurance to cover vets bills (and RSPCA legal fees!!)

Like everything, it comes down to money really. A vet cant insist an owner allows the pet to have xrays or tests ,he can only recommend whats best . After that , the owner isnt allowed to just let the animal suffer , so either he pays for treatment or he can have the animal put to sleep , even if it could be saved. Some vets just pts without a second thought, some vets will tell owners to contact charities to see if theres any financial help on offer, a few may offer staged payments , others may treat the dog free and rehome it often via a rescue, to someone who can afford to look after it in sickness and in health ! Yes you can get pet insurance but in isnt cheap, like all insurance it has loopholes , and it wont cover a pet after a certain age . Its good though to pay for serious incidents like operations / road accidents. Also usually covers 3rd party like if the car owner had been hurt because of the dogs action.

cheers Venice. Mentioned it to my friends who have insurance on their dog but as you say it has loopholes and doesnt cover most of the things. They have had to shell out a fortune just to get bad teeth removed-- over £100 just to go under anaesthetic before any treatment. You don't pay that at the dentist!

My tesco pet insurance doesnt cover dental work. It did cover my two cavaliers eating a box of thorntons chocolates and a night in chestergates animal hospital cost 1000.00. They were both fine after their ordeal!
