New London-style travel cards to be rolled out in Merseyside

Merseyside's first electronic travel cards are set to be rolled out this month.

The old fashioned Saveaway tickets will be phased out and replaced with a card similar to the London Oyster card.

The Merseyside version will be called a Walrus card, and the first ones will be available on the Wirral.

The Saveaway has been a feature of Merseyside travel for 40 years, but Merseytravel said the move towards ticketless, cash-less technology was helping modernise the local transport network.

Transport chiefs believe being able to gather data from the electronic cards will help them to understand people’s travel patterns so that services can be made to best meet their needs. The cards will work in a similar way to the cash-less credit and debit cards introduced by some banks.

Between now and the end of March [2015], cards will be available across Wirral. People will be able to get one free of charge when they buy a traditional Saveaway, and then from April there will be a £1 charge.

Because not all shops and stores that currently sell Saveaways will have the technology to activate the cards straight away, Saveaways will be phased out gradually as outlets get the equipment they need.

The Wirral scheme will begin on November 24.

Buses in London are card only--no cash so you are forced to buy travel or oyster cards. Pain in the butt if you just want to jump on a bus

In London now you can use your contactless card to pay so you don't need an oyster or travel card. Very easy to pay, just like using any travel card , put it on the reader and off you .

Technology for travel is gaining ground everywhere. If you use this method of getting from Wirral down South - take note-- the Dartford tunnel is going cashless after this month -moving to an upgraded non stopping 'tag' system similar to Londons congestion one .If you dont have the prepaid account....

"once Dart Charge is in place you will be able to make one-off payments in advance or by midnight the day after crossing:.........

online at www.gov.uk/dart-charge
over the phone by calling: 0300 300 0120
via a payzone retail outlet
by post (in advance only): Dart Charge Customer Services PO Box 842 Leeds LS1 9QF"

I can see that being a nightmare in the making next holiday season when all the infrequent users are confronted by it!!
