Thank for replies guys. I'm in work for most of the weekend now so will try your suggestions when home. Mark. Yes my computer knowledge is limited but learning more as I go along. lol The monitor isn't that old and is a Benq led. Hdmi cable is new.

Just another thought, have you properly installed and updated the video card drivers? Ive had it in Windows 7 where the monitor was seen but not worked due to the connection not being recognised, windows 'thought' it was an svga cable and not an hdmi and once updated worked fine.

Thanks everyone for your help. Turned out to be really simple. Settings on Both weren't HDMI to HDMI. Doh!!
