11 tips for keeping your pets safe on Bonfire Night

[Linked Image]

1) Make sure your pet has somewhere to hide, such as under furniture or in a cupboard, and ensure he or she has access to this place at all times.

2) f your pet goes to hide, don’t try to tempt them out as this can make them more stressed.

3) Walk dogs during daylight hours to avoid them being outside when fireworks might go off, and keep cats indoors at night when possible.

4) Close windows and curtains at night, and put on music or the TV to mask the sound of fireworks.

5) If your pet looks scared, ignore their behaviour unless they are likely to harm themselves. Punishing them or giving them fuss will only make things worse in the long run.

6) Make sure your pet can’t escape if there’s a sudden noise, but have them micro chipped in case they do.

7) If your dog suffers particularly badly, speak to your vet. They may be able to prescribe medication, or recommend pheromone diffusers, which disperse calming chemicals into the room. Both options should be used alongside behavioural therapy.

8) Ignore the firework noises yourself.

9) Playing with one of your pet’s toys may encourage them to join in, which could prove a distraction. But don’t force them to play if they don’t want to.

10) If you’ve got pets that live outside, partially cover cages, pens and aviaries with blankets, so that one area is sound-proofed. But make sure your pet can still see out.

11) Provide lots of extra bedding for outdoor pets, to give your pet somewhere to burrow.
