Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.

Night Without Sleep
by Ellen Bailey

Have you ever had a night
when you just couldn't sleep?
Even when you're so tired
you could fall off your feet?

You get up for awhile,
and then you lay back down
And just lie there,
watching the clock go round

Then you remember that old adage,
"Try counting sheep"
It is supposed to help people
who have trouble falling asleep

After some time has passed by
You decide you'll give it a try
And you start counting sheep,
counting even their feet

Since sleep won't come,
you get out of bed
And decide to have some
roast mutton instead

A poem I wrote about the digital age.

Narcissistic selfies cover my screen.
Full of attention grabbing contacts, living their "dream".
But what does it mean? To gather a "like"?
An acknowledgement of existence, for an ego-spike?
Hours upon hours are spent staring a screen.
With people feeling so sociable, yet no one to be seen.
You see them walking down the street, with their head in their phone.
Talking to hundreds of "friends" and yet are physically alone.
For them life is just text, a new status or post.
They feel perfectly alive, but live as a ghost.
If there is a way for us to escape it, I wouldn't know how.
As by posting this poem, I am doing it now.
But this is where we are at, and this is far from the end.
This is an evolution, it is far from just a trend.
We have created this technology to further connect.
But the side effect is, we are losing respect.
Respect for communication, respect for what's around us.
We are letting this age slowly, consume and impound us.
And as generations go by, this will only spread.
Their whole lives being dictated, by words they have read.
Sharing anything they do, that has any interest.
Instead of living in the moment, and just letting it digest.
So when you post something, stop and think about why you do.
Is it to genuinely to show them? Or is it really just for you?

Can YOU remember it ?

POEM THAT SOME CAN RELATE TO

I remember the cheese of my childhood,
And the bread that we cut with a knife,
When the children helped with the housework,
And the men went to work not the wife.

The cheese never needed a fridge,
And the bread was so crusty and hot
The children were seldom unhappy
And the wife was content with her lot.

I remember the milk from the bottle,
With the yummy cream on the top,
Our dinner came hot from the oven,
And not from the fridge; in the shop.

The kids were a lot more contented,
They didn't need money for kicks,
Just a game with their mates on the road,
And sometimes the Saturday flicks.

I remember the shop on the corner,
Where a pen'orth of lollies was sold
Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic?
Or is it...I'm just getting old?

I remember the 'loo' was the lav
And the bogey man came in the night,
It wasn't the least bit funny
Going "out the back" with no light.

The interesting items we perused
From the newspapers cut into squares,
And hung on a peg in the loo,
It took little to keep us amused.

The clothes were boiled in the copper
With plenty of rich foamy suds
But the ironing seemed never ending
As Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'.

I remember the slap on my backside,
And the taste of soap if I swore
Anorexia and diets weren't heard of
And we hadn't much choice what we wore.

Do you think that bruised our ego?
Or our initiative was destroyed?
We ate what was put on the table
And I think life was better enjoyed.

ANON

What are 'duds' ?

Here is a poem for you Granny.
Its called ....Grannies little laptop, By Roann Mendrig.

Granny has a laptop,
its sleek and shiny new;
She gazes at it fondly,
and wonders... what to do?

She keeps it gently on her lap,
she really thinks its nice,
She doesn't like the mouse at all,
she's very scared of mice!

But soon she'll start blogging
and take the world by storm,
With precise posts on ecology,
and why our globe is warm!

She'll be in touch on email,
with family friends on the net;
And keep us all enthralled,
with her global tete-a-tete!

She'll engage in quirky forums,
and have a million fans,
Asking for her recipes,
of fish curries and flans!

She'll keep the world begging,
for her poetry and prose,
For her masterpiece in Egyptology,
for the stories that she knows!

So, get set darling Granny,
we're so happy you're online,
You're a Granny in a million,
I'm so glad you're mine!!!

I've just come across a poem which I enjoyed reading. I must admit struck a chord with me as I don't like housework...

Dust if you must, but wouldn't it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter
Bake a cake, or plant a seed
Ponder this difference between want and need.

Dust if you must, but There's not much time
With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb
Music to hear, and books to read
Friends to cherish, and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the worlds out there
With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain
This day will not come round again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind
Old age will come and it's not kind
And when you go and go you must
You, yourself will make more dust.
