Thinking of going to Ireland for one or two weeks break this summer.

It is so long since I have been there (hitch hiking in 1973) and ended up in Dingle Bay where there was only one fisher man's cottage on the beach. Went midnight bathing and the phosphorous sparkled on our skins, it was a beautiful place to be.

Not sure whether Northern Ireland or Southern Ireland would be better and if anyone has any pointers, to where the nicest area to go for a pleasant stay would be, I would be pleased for any suggestions.

At the moment I have no plans to be taking a car with me, and not sure if that is wise or not, but it could always change.

Hi Granny, Have never been to Northern Ireland but have travelled around Southern Ireland. If you are taking your car try looking at Irish ferries, they have holiday home deals,I have used these a couple of times, the houses are lovely, spacious and spotlessly clean. If you decide to fly ryanair have good deals if you book early enough.
I have just priced a weekend taking my car from holyhead with Stena and they want £264, ryanair flight for 2 and hire car £136.
Worth shopping around.
Places to visit will depend on the weather, if you like walking or you could stay in Dublin (loads to do) and use the tour bus etc

Don't touch Budget car rental unless you like being robbed. Easyjet do good deals with Eurocar if you go to the North but you can take it to the South (extra premium applies).

Galway everytime. Galway city, very up and coming. then there's Galway bay, peaceful and very olde time. you have salthill then about 3 miles from the city, this is your southport kind of place, arcades etc. there is so much to do and see. your also not far from all the different locations were the quiet man film was set, with John Wayne, they are all places of interest now kept just as they were then.
Galway granny, iam telling you x

Really great response here. Many thanks to you all and I will chew everything over before making an informed decision.
Great help, thanks again.

If you need any maps or guide books let me know I have some up to date maps.
If you did drive and use a sat nav make sure its up to date as Ireland have got some great new roads since 2007.
We are doing Dingle, Clonakilty, Fermoy, Waterford, and Rossnaree this year
